[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a market street in Xining, capital city of Qinghai province. The year is 1986, Western lifestyle and capitalist thinking is slowly starting to penetrate Chinese society but has not yet reached remote Qinghai. This province, on the outskirts of the Tibetan culture, is still deeply traditional. A land of mountains, huge grassy plains and - reputedly - secret prison camps. Xining was however a rather nice city with an interesting mix of cultures.
This picture, taken on a dull and rainy day, was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Great exotic mood. Many people in their daily life. Fine presentation.
Regards.

I like the old China shots you're uploading, Gert. I wonder what else you've got in store. This is a great daily life - as it used to be - shot.

Benny

Many people, yet all of them are in the right places. The row of selling stands (or whatever they're called)the man captured in his walk and the people in the background make sort of diagonal line - it brings order to this seemingly chaotic scenery.
Some of them are wearing navy blue, others - green clothes. Does it mean something? I thought all were supposed to wear the former.
Best regards
Joanna

Hi Gert. Nice daily life shot from China. As Joanna says, lots of people but the image is very tidy to look at. May have looked good in B&W too. Chris

Very lifely scene and not so obsolete in a way : there are still plenty of such streets but they are disappearing fast ! Again, thanks to post such photos, they are of great interest really !
Compliments,
Cath.

Hej Gert,
The vegetables to the left (onions, oranges?) nicely matchtes the little baby above. Noone is looking at you here, except that policeman, taking a long step in your direction. Did he say something to you?
