Silkroad travels: Taishan lake

Frank (buin) has asked what the colorful dresses were for. The dresses are sold to tourists at Taishan lake in the Tien Shan mountains for festivities. The Uighurs and other Turk minorities in Xin jiang have a long tradition of colorful dresses. This tradition is eagerly picked up by local as well as visiting Han Chinese. The kitschy outfits shown here have of course little to do with tradition, much more with tourism. Remember the European tourists returning from faraway destinations like the USA, all keyed up with Elvis shirts and Texas hats? I see parallels here.
