Silkroad travels in Xin Jiang: Kashgar

In Kashgar as in other cities of the Xin Jiang province you find a clearcut separation of the largely Uighur Chinese inhabited part and the Han Chinese part.

Sven Hedin wrote in his book "From Stockholm to Kashgar" in 1894: "The Chinese town is called Janghy shar (=New town) and is situated ajacent to the Muslim town, separated by a high wall with turrets, battlements and moats." I put the mark of "Map: View" on such a wall.

The picture with the Mao monument might mislead into thinking that the Han Chinese influence has started only recently. But the history books reveal that Chinese emperors established the Western boundary of China more than thousand years ago, defending it against Arab conquerors in the 8th century.

Hallo Dieter!
Frank
