Silkroad travels: Kashgar

We arrived late in the evening in the modern part of Kashgar (Kashi in Chinese), 1300 m asl. What a cultural shock after the many weeks in the sparsely inhabited mountains!

This is Seman lu, the road that leads to the former embassies of Britain and of Czarist Russia. The embassies recall the time of the European conquerors/adventurers at the end of the 19th century. Both embassies today are transformed into modern Chinese accomodations, hotel Qiniwak and hotel Seman.

The scene on the picture reveals several things: the sky is leaden from the desert dust as usual for Kashgar; electrical scooters dominate the road, cyclists are also in evidence--and there are modern Chinese cars, models we have never seen before. Look at the faces, they are of Uighur, Tajik or Chinese type.

We were quite amused to find the white cross symbol of the Swiss flag represented wherever there was an MD or a pharmacy; see on buildings to the right. The official Red cross symbol was in 1863 designed as a color-inverted copy of the Swiss flag.

The "Map: View" mark is on Hotel Qiniwak; to the Southeast you will find the Id Kah mosque.

Hallo Dieter!
Frank

Hey Dietrich,

A very fine documentary. Someday I hope I`ll undertake an adventure like yours, but until then I`ll just comment. :)
A fine documentary of eastern Chinese daily life, very good palette of colors, a vivid scene. Scooters, bikes and cars, all in the same place. Nicely done.

Enjoy.
