Silkroad travels: Kashgar

The road to Kashgar widens, and traffic is dense: this is still the Old Silk Road! The road is bordered to the right by mulberry trees; the berries are an important food idem. Dried mulberries are eaten as a paste, there is mulberry marmelade, and the best is mulberry wine.

Xinjiang was for many centuries a neglected part of the Chinese empire but this is no longer the case. The Arabs were decisively fended off the Western frontiers of China in the 8th century. Xinjiang was little settled by Han Chinese, more by sheperds and farmers coming from today's Mongolia, Kazachstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

The "Great Power Game" between 19th century Britain and the Russian Czars changed many things: The Chinese governement started from 1920 on building roads right down to Kashgar, based on plans prepared by---Sven Hedin, the Swedish adventurer-geographer!

Hallo Dieter!
Interessanter Blickwinkel entlang eurer Karawane - man ist richtig "dabei"! Was für ein Wandel in der Szenerie im Vergleich zur bisherigen Reise ...
Grüße aus dem Frühling - vor dem großen Sturm!
Frank
