Silkroad travels: Xinjiang

Another eyeful of the landscape at Ulughat Daban (=pass), on our way to Kashgar, at about 2'700 m asl.. The Alay kuu Kirkasi mountains, presented here, border the great Tarim basin. They connect the Pamir mountain ranges with the Tien Shan mountains in the North. The Pamir region in turn borders in the South to the Hindukush, in the East to Karakorum and the Tibetan plateau with the Himalayas.

The Central Asian mountains and the Tarim basin were formidable obstacles of the Silk Road network in the past, access was often denied by local princes. When Tsarist-Russian and English explorers first met in Kashgar at the foot of the mountains seen here, they had to draw maps themselves and negotiate their stay with the local Khan: the region was a white patch on European maps of the 19th century.

Lit.: P. Hopkirk, 1984. "Foreign Devils on the Silk Road: The Search for Lost Cities and Treasures of Chinese Central Asia". Oxford Univ. Press

Technical stuff: The original JPG image was intentionally underexposed. I had to add the very top of the mountain to the left by stamping in PS. The rest is usual: Increase exposure, contrast by 12%, saturation by 10%., sharpen 20% 1 pixel radius at full image size, again after reduction.

An amazing view, where the mountain seems painted by hand.
maybe I would have cropped a bit the part at the bottom.

Hallo Dieter!

Super !
LG Christian

Yes Dietrich: Exactly as I remember it - amazing hues of gray. This is an amazing image with subtle variation in luminescence. Well presented. regards, c

Wonderful rock colours. Actually, I like the contrast between the massive mountains and the small rocks in the foreground.
