Silkroad travels: Xinjiang province, China

On our second day in China we discover one of the very remote parts of China, the Alaykuu Kirkasi (a mountain range). We entered our first big settlement, Ulughat (2'360 m asl.) after passing over the Karabel Daban (2'933 m asl.). It is no surprise that its center is occupied by a mosque; the Arab conquest in Central Asia culminated in a battle at Talas (= Dzhambul, Kazachstan; in 751 AD), securing a Muslim influence on the peoples in Central Asia. The Silk Road was not only a warlord's path and a trade artery but also the easy route for information, culture, religions. The Uighurs started settling here in the 9th century. Like the neighboring Kyrgyz and the Tajiks they adopted Islam gradually at the expense of formerly prevalent Buddhism, Nestorianism and Zoroastrism.

Hallo Dieter!
Hier seid Ihr ja anscheinend in einer sehr verborgenen Ecke dieser Welt angekommen. An Leben sieht man nur eine Person und ein Pferd. Mir gefallen die vielen interessanten Details in diesem Foto und diese etwas ungewöhnliche und bescheidene Moschee ... und immer noch diese nahezu absolut karge Umgebung.
Grüße aus dem 14°C warmen Siegen. Das ist ein harter Winter! ;-)

Hallo Dietrich,
eine tolle Gegend. Was für faszinierende Architektur, wenn ich mir da die Fertigteilhäuser-Siedlungen bei uns anschaue...ich weiss, kann man schwer vergleichen, aber es hat was mit Kultur zu tun.
Danke auch für die Notizen am Rande, absolut interessant.

nun bist du also in Xinjiang angekommen. Das Bild ist beeindruckend. Das Dorf mitsamt dem Dunghaufen vor der grandiosen Bergkulisse gefällt mir. Leider fehlt im Himmel jede Farbe. Darum hätte ich ihn auch abgeschnitten. Die Schrift auf der Wand links ist leider auch nicht zu entziffern.

The mosque looks beautiful, especially considering the surroundings. It's a shame the sky is so blown out.
