Easy going.., a photo from Xinjiang, West

Photographer's Note

Turpan or Turfan literally means 'Rich and Fertile Land' in Turkic, sits at the very centre of Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region and is separated from the capital city Urumqi by the enthralling and mysterious Heavenly Mountain (Tianshan) in the north. In its south lies the great Taklamakan Desert, the second largest desert in the world. A desert bastian, it is situated in the low 'Turfan Depression' 150 metres below sea level, one of the lowest places on earth and the hottest in China which account for its extreme climate, well above 40oC in summer and far below freezing point in winter.

As early as the Han dynasty Turpan, an obscure backwater was once a crucial point along the Northern Silk Road. With its abundance of light and heat, this largely Uighur populated oasis town is reputed as the 'Hometown of Grapes' and its large oasis produces most of the best grapes in China. This easy going town despite the intense heat has been made livable by the construction of vines and trellises providing avenues of shade from the scorching sun. Every household has a ventilated barn on the roof and some of the world's finest grapes are produced here, thanks to the irrigation project known as Karez System, which is considered one of the three greatest ancient projects eponymous with Great Wall and Grand Canal in China.

There are few cars here and donkey carts dominate, the most popular mode of transport amongst the local. One of the nicest way to spend the late afternoon is to rent a donkey cart and take short trip of the countryside south of town, a world of dusty tracks, vineyards, wheat fields, shady poplars trees, running streams and incredibly friendly smiling Uighurs.

this daily snapshot is a good reportage shot for these people of Turpan.It is nice to rent someone a donkey cart, to take his stroll in the countryside of the area,seeing all these you write in your note.

I'm impressed with how well you managed that difficult sky. Using the trees to dominate was excellent photography. The image is beautifully balanced with the 2 elements in the foreground, both very interesting. The image is razor sharp and gives the impression of three dimensionality. Great work as usual. the low POV creates a deep perspective, in a simple and powerful composition.
You have caught a scene of the daily life, fresh, natural and very spontaneous, with the dynamism that some vehicles provide, especially the donkey cart in foreground.
