Photographer's Note

Taken in the Uyghur old quarter of Yarkand, an oasis town in the southwest of restive Xinjiang, on the former Southern Silk Road on the southern rim of Taklamakan desert in Tarim Basin. A typical Central Asian town with lively dusty streets, warren of muddy lanes lined with poplar trees, donkey carts, artisans' workshops, colourful bazaars and traditional mud bricks houses. Having spent 1 month in beautiful Uyghur homeland of East Turkestan, I've never in all of my photo escapade been so touched for one particular place along with its deep sense of history and respect, it inspired me, moved me, frustrated me and held me in a very special way.

This picture is just one of the many aspects and faces of Xinjiang. A different look from a Western cultural perspective perhaps but this one hidden face and her look speaks to you in some way, as it did to me. I can read the dreams in her eyes for the better future in spite of many restrictions and oppression imposed by commie government on the marginalised Uyghurs.

Is she probably in the shadow of Rebiya Kadeer? the Uyghur freedom fighter living in exile and most wanted by the commie!!

Thanks for reading and viewing
