Taken in the Uyghur old quarter of Yarkand, an oasis town in the southwest of restive Xinjiang, on the former Southern Silk Road on the southern rim of Taklamakan desert in Tarim Basin. A typical Central Asian town with lively dusty streets, warren of muddy lanes lined with poplar trees, donkey carts, artisans' workshops, colourful bazaars and traditional mud bricks houses. Having spent 1 month in beautiful Uyghur homeland of East Turkestan, I've never in all of my photo escapade been so touched for one particular place along with its deep sense of history and respect, it inspired me, moved me, frustrated me and held me in a very special way.
This picture is just one of the many aspects and faces of Xinjiang. A different look from a Western cultural perspective perhaps but this one hidden face and her look speaks to you in some way, as it did to me. I can read the dreams in her eyes for the better future in spite of many restrictions and oppression imposed by commie government on the marginalised Uyghurs.
Is she probably in the shadow of Rebiya Kadeer? the Uyghur freedom fighter living in exile and most wanted by the commie!!
Thanks for reading and viewing

Ciao e buona giornata

Oh my goodness Abmdsudi - The stark simplicity of the colours here give the shot a compelling aspect. Initially it is the colours which draw the eye but once the lady's eyes have been spotted they forge a relationship with the viewer. As always you use your excellent off-centre framing. Warm regards Rosemary

Despite the covering of most of this ladies face, I can see in her eyes a deep and broad smile, amazing how expressive the eyes can be when that is all we have to go by. She looks happy, but also quite impish and mischievous and it's a brilliant impression to take from a photo. The fact that there is a dark background brings a huge emphasis to the woman and her unseen smile. Thanks for sharing, I continue to love learning from your portraits.

Mysterious portrait picture.
Love the cropping you used here which gave a superb result for the composition. Strong color contrast and perfectly executed clarity make the scene outstanding. Bravo!!

I love the smile in her eyes. I also find the details interesting too. Her bright red jacket and her eyeliner. Despite (or because of?) her covered face, how she looks is important to her. This is a good compo as you place her in the frame fore good graphic effect. Excellent dof and wonderfully sharp.
Love your photos!

Another fantastic portrait. She obviously gives you an amused and friendly smile, although we can only see her eyes. The combination of white head-cloth, red dress and almost pitch black background is stunning. This is a truly fascinating photo. One of many from you.

Indeed they do Abmdsudi!
Great composition with good use of contrasting colours. Good control of DOF and exposure.

this is an amazing portrait, it's very intriguing and leaves a strong and lasting impression by showing so little. The two spots to the right work like magnets and captivate the viewer who senses a warm smile and tries to figure out thoughts and feelings too - maybe can't help but project them. There's excellent sharpness and two bright and lovely colours against a mysterious background that refuses to give us any additional clue. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely month,

Salam dear Abmdsudi. I see you are back to Turkestan with affection and deep understanding of a people facing obliteration not just from the commies as you diplomatically call them but from the Han's sense of hegemony and some divine destiny that they seem to have inherited from their Middle Kingdom POV of the world. By coincidence I have just read yesterday in our news about the current increase in persecution of the Uyghurs whose fight for freedom has been labeled by the Chinese government as the result of terrorism and extremism. It makes one wonder who is terrorizing whom and torturing whom. As for the photo, it speaks volumes about a way of life that is being threatened and it shows in her stance an indomitable spirit. great use of colour and cropping. Long live East Turkestan.
I am including the link to the article published yesterday- it'sworth reading:

And indeed here the eyes *have* to say it all, don't they! A nice warm off-center portrait; the good feelings are easy to spot even through the face covering. Beautiful colors and a great dark BG really allow this shot to come alive.
adidas5nb (5685) 2013-07-01 18:27
great off centered portrait with fantastic color combinations.love the intensity in her eyes.
jjcordier (78372) 2013-07-01 22:17
Intéressant cadrage décalé pour ce portrait en trois couleurs. Les yeux rieurs attirent irrésistiblement notre regard.
kato (11630) 2013-07-02 0:45
You're capturing well thos portrait by a good composition and excellent ton/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the girl wearing red blouse and white hood. She keeps a friendly look. So, considering clothes, it is surely the Islamic area here also in China.
jhm (142900) 2013-07-02 4:34
She looks happy, but also quite impish and mischievous and it's a brilliant impression to take from a photo, for us Western world something specially.
Excellent composition, nice presentation, TFS.

A charming portrait like only you can spot on the streets. Great catch, I love the saturated red color.
Have a fine day.
marabu61 (9239) 2013-07-02 14:09
A truly wonderful portrait of this women. While one is attracted by the red at first, once you have looked in those eyes you are lost. Very fitting for your story about the freedom of the Uyghur people.
have a good week
CLODO (31606) 2013-07-03 0:47
Only 3 colors, and a deframed portrait in which we can only see the smiling eyes. The black background reinforces the red of her dress.

Ciao Abmdsudi, great portrait of lovely girl with beautiful eyes, wonderful colors and excellent clarity, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Belle expression souriante des yeux de la dame, intéressant le cadrage comme le contraste des trois couleurs
yquem46 (38750) 2013-07-03 10:41
only 2 colors on a black BG and an off centered compo for this expressive gaze
Well done, best regards
bayno (18344) 2013-07-04 4:42
another beautiful portrait, eyes say a lot, in this case are expressive and intriguing, fantastic contrast between the bright red hue and the black background, perfect framing and details ...
krzychu30 (15510) 2013-07-05 1:38
beautiful portrait picture, that hide in itself kind of mystery and curiosity! It´s nicely framed with the woman placed off the center and with so perfectly achieved, black background, which separates excellently the focal point of the composition.
Have a nice weekend
delpeoples (54471) 2013-07-08 23:03
Such a beautiful and mysterious woman, as you say, her eyes are enchanting and her shy look makes us want to know more about her. I like how you composed this, with your subject off-centre and tightly cropped. The colours and skin tones are beautiful. Excellent and artistic, what more can I ask for?
Angshu (56460) 2013-07-10 2:45
Normally I am habitauted in seeing candid shots including portraits from you...now this one is an aberration of your 'rule'. This portrait shows little but reveals a lot! Why does she cover her face? not to reveal her identity? The black BG creates a 'studio' like setting for this fine portrait!
mirosu (15126) 2013-07-13 0:48
Simple but excellent image. I can feel the smiling face through the eyes. You have captured it in excellent light and superb color contrast.
The asymmetrical arrangement is very good. Well done. Greetings, Miro.
