Silkroad travels: Taklamakan
We leave the Kashgar oasis now, but this time not on bike but by train. One branch of the ancient and modern Silk Road longs the Taklamakan desert along its Northern rim. So does the train track between Kashgar and Aksu. The train track is wedged in between the Tien Shan foothills (in the background) and the Kaxgar he (=river) that disappears progressively into the sandy ground. Only perennial plants able to develop deep roots grow here, like the leguminose Alhagi sparsifolia, the Salt cedar Tamarix ramosissima, and a Dwarf aspen, Populus diversifolia. They are the mainstay for wild animals like the Bactrian camel (only a few are left!) and antelopes.
In "View: map" you see the Silk Road and the new railway track. You have to zoom out to see the Taklamakan desert. Sven Hedin had a mandate by the Chinese governement to trace this road. |

Hallo Dieter!
