Photographer’s Note
The mighty walls of Drepung monastery offered little protection from Chinese occupation planes and bombs, over 50 years ago. Only 12 monasteries exist now, once there were over 6000. Crumbled mounds of earth dot the grounds, from long destroyed buildings. Tibet once held ancient treasures of wealth and education, now destroyed. Peaceful, kind people were no match for a modern army. Now the last of the old villages are systematically being removed, and the villagers "relocated" for easier control by the oppressive Chinese government.
