I continue with my scans from a visit to Tibet in 1986.
This is from outside the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, the holiest temple of Tibetan Buddhism, or Lamaism. The Jokhang is the natural centre of Lhasa, constantly visited by large numbers of pilgrims (unless the Chinese authorities decide to keep visitors away for "security" reasons). Especially in the evenings the Barkhor Square in front of the temple is where people come to mingle and watch other people, just like the main streets of any city in Mediterranean Europe are filled with families strolling back and forth in the evenings.
This picture was probably taken in the middle of the day. I will add a morning picture and one from an evening as workshops. They were all scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Snygga färger och bra not.

What a nice place here is. I think it is joyful to visit such a ancient Temple and shopping center. Very nice photo you captured.

I love this well defined and deep presentation of the picturesque and fascinating religious site. The walking ladies in the foreground give a superb sense of movement and naturalness. The actions, attitudes and clothes of the people enrich the picture with information about daily life and habits in this place. Colours and textures are very appealing and enhance the exotic allure of the scene. The workshop pictures are beautiful and fascinating too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

Det finns verkligen mycket att se i den här bilden, ett överflöd av intressanta detaljer. Personerna ger liv och varorna på bordet ger många färger.

Apart from the fact that it must have been wonderful to be in Tibet in 1986 the composition is great of course, the people, walking into the frame and the quality of the scan excellent

J'aime beaucoup cette scčne de la vie quotidienne dans cette partie du monde. J'aime beaucoup ce fourneau en plein air ainsi que les couleurs vives des vętements ā vendre.

very good and much in the spirit of TE to bring historical slides to a wider public. You did obviously a good job in scanning the slide, a tricky procedure. Thanks for this one, Gert.
Best regards, Dietrich

another great picture of yours! Looking at them is almost like reading a story - one can dwell on the details for very long. I love their reality and you do have very good eye for capturing every day life scenes.
Very well composed and with greatly balanced colors.
Thanks for sharing and enjoy your evening

There is such a charming dated feet to this one.
Very nice the contrast between the colorful shawls and the rather drab colors of the architecture against a pleasant sky.
I wonder what that ovenlike structure behind the streetseller is?

Another interesting picture from your archive, great document of the daily life scene, it is really a good quality of the scan
ACL1978 (7317) 2013-03-15 18:45
All three of your shots from this temple are nicely taken, Gert, but I agree with your decision to make this the main post - the bursts of color from the cloth here are eye catching and vibrant, and the scene gives you a sense both of the building and life as it goes on around it. Thanks!
abmdsudi (36294) 2013-03-15 20:08
A splendid scanned image again documenting the occasion, you've really brought the street scene to life, a bright scene with the passers by in a more favourable position. You already know it would look better timed so the legs are walking into the frame rather than out, I think the direction adds to the whole feel here with lots of interest around particularly in the background. I quite like what's going on with the vivid striking colours there, vibrant, bold street candid and something for my eye to be drawn so full of cultural detail skilfully captured. Another interesting and excellently executed image with informative narrative as always. Well done
mafegan (8622) 2013-03-16 1:02
This scanned image has a wonderful 1980s feel about.
It and seems that you have so many wonderful slides in your wardrobe you can afford to add 2 as workshops - great images in their own right.
Tibet is high on my list of places to visit!
Thanks for sharing, Marlene

Not every day one can see this kind of photos of Lhasa from the 80s, when Tiziano Terzani and Paul Theroux travelled there and not many people took photos in that city. Thank you for sharing.
wolf38 (29804) 2013-03-16 8:55
Hello Gert. Images from the past. The photo perfectly complements your gallery. The backward glance is always very informative and thought provoking. We see the example of Tibet, which has since changed - or not. Overall, an interesting high post.
SteveH (6191) 2013-03-16 23:53
Hi Gert, 1986 doesn't seem that long ago (to me at least) although this image conveys a sense of scene from long ago. You did well waiting for the traditionally dressed women to pass in front of the Temple. nice work. Cheers, Steve
jemaflor (77476) 2013-03-17 1:11
An intersting daily scen view, well balanced with Fg, people and colors, light is well taken, tfs.
jusninasirun (17152) 2013-03-19 17:54
You have framed this shot really well leaving the space for the ladies to walk in the frame. The colorful shawls and the seller adds interest in this composition. Excellent scan from beautifully toned shot on film.
Well done and have a nice day.
siolaw (37644) 2013-03-20 8:43
All these are really nice documents, and this has nice strong colours and contrast.
We can see the "modern" world has already hit the place by the shoes of the people on the right side...!
annjackman (16819) 2013-03-21 10:41
A picture full of interest with the people in their traditional clothes positioned well in the frame. There is a lovely splash of colour from the shawls. Another great scan from you.
Kind Regards, Ann
adores (32676) 2013-03-21 17:53
I like them all - they show a really authentic place that must be changed by now. The architecture, the colourful shawls to sell, the pose of the man and the women passing, the shoes... I like this scene a lot. Even the Chinese cap on the woman's head, is a perfect detail here!
macjake (49296) 2013-03-27 10:31
yes, I will post that photo tomorrow morning or tonight my time...so thats probably in the afternoon or early evening your time tomorrow :)
what a scene this is! its the type of scene that really stands out and makes me wodner what the heck everything is!! such strange but interesting architecture. and what in the world is that thing on the right with the door?
its great to see the colors on the bottom too for added contrast and another focal point.
very interesting scene you have here
Miguel82 (17317) 2013-03-28 10:00
Excellent street scene Gert,
Good sharpness, light and pov
Nowadays Lhassa became a place for prostitution this evolution is a pity
Kielia (22293) 2013-03-29 10:31
another excellently scanned slide and a wonderful impression of daily life. This interesting place is very well captured. Most of all I like the mood, one can see that the busy people who were living there were feeling comfortable! TFS!

Hi, Gert, ni hao!

Urs (14082) 2013-05-17 18:25
You will not belief it, in 1986 when you took the picture above I also was in Lhasa, but 6 months earlier in March, doing full page background features about the political-economical situation in Tibet for the Tages-Anzeiger in Zurich. Unfortunately all these slides have been lost in Switzerland, thanks for sharing your shot of the Jokhang Gompa. Well done
