Among the first pictures I scanned after getting myself a scanner some five years ago were those I had taken during a long journey to China in 1986.
For most of those pictures the result wasn't very good. I posted some here, but most were too bad for showing. When I recently had another look at those unpublished pictures I decided to give them another try, because I really liked some of them.
So now I have rescanned a number of photos, mainly from Tibet which probably was the highlight of the journey.
This is a street in the central part of Lhasa, capital of Tibet. I think parts of Lhasa have changed tremendously since 1986 and become just like any other Chinese city. However, I believe this central area around the revered Jokhang Temple, the holiest temple of TIbetan Buddhism, probably looks more or less the same today.
This is from a Kodachrome slide.

Beautiful shot, Gert. You've captured the atmosphere of the street in this shot. There's so much to hold the viewer's attention here, from the beggar in the foreground to the colourful clothing and architectural detail. This image makes me want to visit Tibet, which is probably one of the highest compliments a photo can get.

Excellent quality for this nearly 30 years old scanned shot and a good street scene with nice daylife action.
Great colors and contrast.
Would love to have some of these great old filmrolls for my old cameras.
Have a great WE,

Hi Gert, we are today neighbours but not the close ones. Wonderful document from Lhasa. The people look verz similar like now, but i do not remember these houses. Maybe there are now new ones. These like old and poor. The windows have this typical feature - ruffle in the upper part, but they are rectangular, not painted trapeizoidal like usually in Tibet ( see here. Probably the area near Potala Palace changed a lot.
great quality after so many years, the scanning is very good. Excellent colours and nice sharpness, composition is not scanning dependent :).

Hello dear Gert,
Oldies are goodies ! The analogue photography was really by far better than our hightech instruments we have this days in our hands.
This one from Lasa is also amasing with it's perfect sharpness and colorfull scenery.
TFS and have a great weekend my friend.
PS.Let me share a joke my son (who is now 41) made recently. He said to me why those fareasters didn't invent digital cameras 30 years ago ? The reason is quite simple, as he had to carry my heavy aluminum luggage with Pentax 6x7 and its additional aquipment plus the heavy Manfrotto tripot during all of our trips 30 years ago !!

this is amazing to be able to find in your archives photo like this one. It is not only great photo by all means but also very important document. I wish it was me witnessing the busy street scene in Lhasa. Lovely colors and light, very good composition and actually fascinating content.
Thanks so much for sharing
Have a nice evening

Another good image from your archive, surprisingly well done with the pp, giving a very good impression of a bit like a scene from the wild wild west. It's beautiful simple compo very well detailed, sharpness and the contrast is amazingly beautiful and lively. This makes for a very eye pleasing picture. Well done

Awesome capture of this street scene! This was taken long time ago but I wonder if the place has changed much since you last visited. Progress comes very slow in those parts of the world. Good pov and dof with nice details. Wonderful colors with good saturation. Well done, tfs.
ourania (36472) 2013-02-23 10:40
it's a really wonderful picture showing a very interesting and busy "exotic" city and its inhabitants. I like very much your point of view and composition and the way the colourful people seem to be emerging from the converging sides of the street. You've managed the light, the colours and the contrasts in a very creative and effective way rendering the view so lovely, vibrant and pleasing. Congratulations and thank you!
A friend, a Korean author who's married to a lady from Leros, showed us a few months ago pictures from his recent journey to Lhasa. These were mostly pictures of people but the impression we got from that place was very different from your photo. It definitely looked less exotic.
All the best, have a great evening,

another interesting photo from your archive. Good quality of scan. Well reportage about the daily life in Lhasa in 1986. Photo I like.
Have a nice evening.

what a calm and still soo lively streetscene.
Fantastic colours and magnificent atmosphere. Beautiful photo and place and I sure hope it is to be seen still just like this.

Another wonderful older scan, this time from Tibet. Beautiful street scene; the buildings with great detail and character, and a bright, beautiful sky. But of course it is the people that are the draw here, and I wonder about the story behind this scene. The lone figure in the middle of the street seems as though he's facing an onslaught; everyone else in the shot appears to be moving toward him in the same direction! I like how you've also bookended the crowd with bicycles here. Interesting capture and a good look at daily life in Lhasa. Thanks!

Hello Gerd. People in the streets of Tibet. You show so many interesting pictures from the past. We can compare these images with the present. We see the changes in the living conditions. We can see whether the political situation has improved, etc. Such documentary photos have its own value for the viewer.

kato (11630) 2013-02-24 0:23
You're capturing well this Lhasa's street by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the old buildings with white wall which stand in a row on both sides of the passage and the residents who are walking along the passage. It's impressive in the big window which is visible to the second floor and the third floor of a building, too. The whole is managed well by a good arrangement and beautiful color combination. So, you show well the atmosphere of this passage to us in daily life.

Another one of your fantastic travel documents from a time long gone by. As you said Lasha looks probabely a lot different today.
A pleasing colorful street scene from this amazing place. And still, I can only repeat myself, your scans are of an amazing quality.

Hello Gert ,
This is a superb testimony of the life in Lhasa 30 years ago . The composition is perfect , as the quality of the picture .

Interessantes Dokument!
Grüße von Elvira

Hi Gert. I like this photo for the fact that it records a past that is no more and even more for the fact that Most if not all of the people are Tibetan- not a Han in sight, unless it's the fellow pushing the bike. Glad to hear that you are doubling your efforts to resurrect these precious images. best wishes. Klaudio.

Curious street, interesting scene.
Good frame and colors.
I like this daily life shot.

macjake (61514) 2013-02-26 15:07
I guess we could call the champion of these older slides/scans and posting them on TE :)
I'm sure most if not everyone loves to view them as its a peek into the past.
You need to go back and get the same POV of all of these scans Gert! Now there's a job for ya!
for this shot here, you were lucky to get such an excellent skyline with the blues and whites.
and I absolutely love the architecture as it looks like it could fall apart at any moment!
great shot and subject

Your photo reminds me the ShangriLa old song of E.L.O. band. Very very interesting photo, We had plans to visit this province in 2008, but China have closed Tibet after some local social&politic protests there.
siolaw (38292) 2013-02-28 22:35
Nice to see Lhasa with no cars and a busy Tibetan population... probably quite different situation by now!
You had great weather which helped for sunny colours. Sharp and well framed too!
Kielia (24073) 2013-03-02 6:54
a great impression with a wonderful atmosphere of daily life in Tibet. The bright colors and the light are very pleasant. Most of all I like the fantastic mood, one can see that the people who are living here are very busy! My compliments also for the note!

Ciao e buona domenica

It is perfect in all points. As a publisher of post cards, I find it excellent material. All is interesting: the faces of the buildings and the faces of people. Many thanks Gert, again, and viva Kodak.

Huge document especially because of the date of the pix Gert..
I can see that you were one of the first foreigners to spend time in the forbidden kingdom..
Excellent street life scene

I am sure a lot has changed in the last 25+ years. The houses are typical of what we see in this area...I've only seen Ladakh. Well defined perspective with the road, with people going on with their daily life including begging. Lovely view in fine light!

A very nice capture of everyday life in Asia: the bycicles, the small shops, the low buildings, and unluckily the poor who has no choice but begging for some spare change, all perfectly captured in one shot. you are right: Asia is changing fast, so thanks for sharing this view of a reality that, for the good or the bad, is becoming rare.
