We are in Qinghai Hu; a lake at 3500 metre's altitude in the Qinghai province. Situated in a very remote region, it was not until recently a few guesthouses opened, but now Chinese tourits also pour in in their 4W drives and an "ethnic village" has been set up close to the lake, where the tourists can live in the tents, used by locals and go and do dances with the minority groups, lifted up by the excessive amounts of bai jiu they drink....alltogether a bit depressing - as han-tourism usually is.

This woman is Kazakh. There are different ethnic groups living in this area; most notably Kazakh, Tibetan and Uighur. On the way to the lake from Xining city, the landscape is dotted with the nomad tents of herders, who still manage to live on the great grasslands of this huge area.
