Photographer’s Note

Walking through the city of Xining in Qinghai province I met these two elderly gentlemen proudly sitting on their doorstep with their granddaughters on their laps. This was in 1986, so a return visit might show these little girls with their own children.

Interesting and well taken scene. Very good expressions. A metaphor for the end of an era and for the upcoming transition China will go through. I can just see these little girls now wearing their cheap designer clothes and chatting on the cellphone, in between shifts at one of the major manufacturing factories.

at least this was a time when it didn't disappeared 3600 girls a day between 1-4 years as it does today , ( don't remember when the one child law came) I noticed the armband with inscription.

Fantastic ! Each expression is great to watch, a close portrait of simple people who seem so happy to be taken in pictures...
