Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, enjoys great fame among tourists not only because the region features a consistently warm climate, but also thanks to its wonderful vistas and landscapes. Among the most dramatic of these attractions is the Stone Forest (Shilin), known since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D.) as the 'First Wonder of the World.'
It is in Lunan Yi Nationality Autonomous County, which is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Kunming and requires only a three-hour drive. It covers an area of 400 square kilometers (96,000 acres) and includes both large and small stone forests, as well as many other scenic spots. An old local saying says that 'If you have visited Kunming without seeing the Stone Forest, you have wasted your time.' Truly, the site is one of the most important attractions of Yunnan.
Walking through the site, visitors marvel at the natural stone masterpieces and are bewitched by the intricate formations. (online source)

This forest of stones in an incredible and spectacular landscape ! Good POV and sharpness. I had already seen pictures of such a place in Madagascar, I didn't know it existed somewhere else on Earth.
Thanks for sharing,

Impressive view on those unusual peaks in their colorful foliage environment
To be picky i'd have cropped the upper left part with the little pieces of blue sky
Best regards, have a nice day

Kunming was recently in the news because of a less pleasant incident.
However, this Stone Forest looks very interesting. The sharp peaks of the rocks rise above a very barren area while it is surrounded by a lush tropical forest in magical autumn colours.
You found an excellent high POV to present us this panorama.
Is it difficult to find your way through this Stone Forest ? Or are there hiking paths ?
Best regards, Paul

l'ottimo pov ci permette di ammirare questa meraviglia della natura nel pieno del suo ambiente, con il contrasto tra le originali rocce e gli alberi che le circondano.

Spectacular scene Kamila.Perfect exposure and sharpness. The colours of the "forest' are enhanced by the warm colours that the trees provide. Lovely POV. Regards. Klaudio.

Unusual and eye-catching geology with the Stone Forest's irregular lines and sharp pinnacles in varying grey shades. Enhanced by your shadow mixture lighting.
Unlike any rock formations I have seen, and therefore magnificent and very special, and I hope to see in person some day.
Thanks for sharing,

very very unique forest!
very cool too :)
just wondering...how did you get here? was it a tour? did you get around on your own in a rented car?
I want to go here someday.
lovely subject, as i said very unique and interesting.
its smart that you placed about 3/4 stone and a 1/4 trees, nice touch

Mnie nie starczylo czasu na Kunming, bardzo żałuję. Ten kamienny las wygląda fantastycznie. I znakomicie go tu pokazałaś. Tam gdzies w okolicach Kunming zyja złote małpy, bardzo piękne podobno. Ciekawa jestem czy je widziałaś?
Jak podróżowałaś po Chinach? Z jakąś zorganizowana wycieczką, czy sama?

I have to admit that I have wasted my time. I was in Kunming, and I saw some very scenic areas not so far from the city, but I didn't go the stone forest. What a shame, but what luck that you show us this amazing photo a few decades later. It is another one of the many nature's wonders of China and your high POV provides a good view of it. The trees give us some sense of the dimensions.
timecapturer (44195) 2014-03-07 2:37
a stunning place and captured so exquisitely. Your POV is perfect at showing us the textures and form of this amazing rock forest. A real sense of its setting and majesty too! Awesome!
Have a good weekend - B.

What a great and interesting capture of this unusual landscape and touch of beautiful autumnal woodland colors, really enhanced by warm lighting. Very nicely composed, one heck of a shot made extra-special by the remarkable textures of those amazing rocks and coupled up with side lighting the impact kicks in. Impressive work. Congrats TFS

What an amazing scene this is, like something from lord of the rings. It shows the majesty of the world and the wonders around every corner. The shapes of the rocks are very striking and especially in comparison to the colors and soft shapes of the trees around it which you have used to perfection to frame the scene. Magical.
All the best

Hi Kamila - China seems to have almost a monopoly on amazing rock formations like these. This is a great perspective that really demonstrates the size and majesty of this area well, and you got it in really flattering light too. Thanks!
ikeharel (51283) 2014-03-08 1:07
A stunning rocks formation, Kamila, and an excelent light upon with superb clarity.
It would be difficult to scale this just by looking at, the place is enormous, yet impressive.
Chosen perspective show good depth and trees in autumn colors added vivid tones.
Enjoy a nice weekend,

the spectacular rock structures are photographed in a good light that helps to accentuate their interesting size and shapes.

Something straight out of Lord of the Rings, this looks incredibly fantasy-like in appearance. Must be a rock climbers paradise, yeah? :) Absolutely amazing what nature has produced, and you've done a fine job in putting it on display through still imagery. The elevated viewpoint offers a sensational look upon these formations, with much definition and dimension. I love how you've composed this to include the colorful surroundings to brighten it up and show how it all relates to each other. Almost looks other worldly, quite fascinating...and very well presented for us to see from afar. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Take it easy.

Wow ..... Awesome location and fantastic composition from a high point, which gives us a wonderful vision for this place, where nature has created these unique shapes with rocks.
Sensational contrast between the grayish color of this stony forest, with the living forest, where the trees offer a rich note of color.
Perfect management of both luminosity and excellent sharpness.
Well done. I love the picture.
Enjoy the weekend.

marina7 (8049) 2014-03-09 12:01
Stone Forest - a very befitting name, looks spectacular! Though I must say those colorful trees that beautifully frame the picture sort of deprive these stunning rocks of their severity by adding a warm and soft touch to the scenery. Great contrast anyway, and a very rare and special place to visit!
My best wishes!
jacquest (18071) 2014-03-09 16:22
This is a great view of this eye catching nature phenomenon. The downward view makes for good details of the interior and the light brings out colors for an image of good quality.

Hello dear Kamila,
Another topclass capture from China with those interesting rocky formations.
Nice framed and enriched with many interesting notes.
TFS and have a nice week ahead.
ChrisJ (94160) 2014-03-10 5:18
Went there on 30 January 2000. It snowed the next day! So sad what happened at the Kunming railway station. I boarded a train there for Chengdu. Good repetition of the limestone karst formations. I like the high pov and the downward, angled position. Have a great week!
Oceania (4462) 2014-03-10 7:16
The nature stone formation is quite interesting. The angle you took this picture is perfect. The colorful trees in the background soften the tone, very nice. I totally enjoy it.
ourania (25320) 2014-03-10 12:32
this is an amazing sight indeed, full of wonder and mystery. Your elevated point of view and the tight framing you opted for have rendered this view very dynamic, the absence of reliable sense of scale adds fascination as we may imagine the dimensions of these old formations at will. The light and the natural colours are lovely, the shadows make the description even more effective and add drama. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
HimalAnda (8444) 2014-03-10 14:05
This is a very impressive place! The POV is very good.
batalay (34563) 2014-03-10 16:04
Your photos of China have been extraordinary. There are rugged, jagged rocks in so man places, including in Capadoccia (Turkey) and Brice Valley (USA) and all are different in the composition. These gray rocks differ significantly from the other two. You certainly did penetrate the hinterland of China, areas that few tourists see.
subhendu_bagchi (25055) 2014-03-11 4:11
wow! What a view! What an interesting part of our earth! Presented nicely with excellent depth and sharpness. Those colourful leafs are contrasting superbly with those rocks. Excellent shot. Tfs.
Angshu (54473) 2014-03-12 1:12
Intriguing and interesting structures indeed...these are wonders of nature. These sharp edged rocks which stand upright look great from your high POV. The colourful foliage in red and green border the stones well

Hello Kamila ,
A superb plunging view on these fantastic rocky formations .

Wow! Awesome capture of this stone forest! We have almost similar formations in the U.S. southwest but I like yours better because of the lush vegetation around it instead the desert that we have. Well done, tfs.

Geia sou Kamila
I saw multi-coloured petrified pieces of wood in Petrified Forest Ntl Park USA.
They had been extracted from underground and offered for sale in touristic offices.
But never in my life I had the chance to see such majestic rock formation as shown above, captured by the rules book in a paradoxal way opposing the subtle colourful leafy trees to the boulder spines.
jmdias (51827) 2014-04-18 2:31
very interesting the shapes of these stones, I saw some similar in shapes in Madagascar (from tv only). very beautiful details, quality of image is perfect. TFS this amazing details of nature.

Wow! My congratulations, Kamila!
Usually I say The nature is the best artist. We have to press the button of camera only. Excellent shot! I have never seen the photos of this stone forest. Thanks for the presentation new interesting place in China.
