The Three States: Solid, Liquid, Gas

After spending the night in a guest house in Yubeng village (Yunnan Province, China), we spent the next day following a foot path to "the sacred waterfall", the final destination of the Kawagebo Inner Kora (Buddhist Pilgrimage). Our Buddhist guides splashed themselves with the water from the falls, drank it, and took some home in a canteen. This place is truly beautiful, and the respect given the water and falls only enhanced my appreciation for being able to "be" in such a spot.

Buddhist monks spend a lifetime studying the relationshps between their minds, their lives, their gods, and the world around them. As I explore my spiritual feelings, my mind spins with thoughts that range from the big bang and the cosmos down to the fundamental particles called mesons and quarks, and all the forces that pull them together and push them apart. Ours lives and our awareness seem to lie in an extremely narrow zone of how these particles can be arranged. Water is critical to life as we know it, and thus to our thoughts and awareness. Water is the ONLY substance on earth that exists in natural conditions in all three states: solid, liquid, and gas.

We have to be careful to understand the facts behind this photograph. Water vapor is invisible. The clouds, which represent the gaseous state of water, are made visible only because water is existing in its liquid or solid state high in the atmosphere, in the form of small droplets or ice crystals.
