Dali has an old town lying within fortified walls with impressive gates. Outside of the old town, the most remarkable structures are the Three Pagodas (San Ta Si), erected in the 9th century, surrounded by the 4000m high Cang Shan mountains. Unfortunately, we did not set sight on the mountains, we only saw grey clouds and much rain.

A great photo, Elaine. Gold on grey looks just gorgeous, and on top of that this bright monk's figure with an umbrella, captured in just a right moment... And just a bit of green on the right. Emptiness is speaking here. Although I like your colours, it is tempting to play a bit; see WS.

A well composed shot - showing us the steps & including the monk off to the right hand side. The monks orange robes provide a nice contrast to the grey colours that take up most of the shot (the gold symbols also accomplish this).

You really have a thing for orange, don't you?
This is a really good shot; your composition is impeccable, you've placed the orange-clad figure in the perfect place in the frame.

interesting effect you have accomplished here: with the exeption of orange and a small area of green, all the rest looks like a strongly desaturated background to the monk;
best wishes, j.

What reaches me here most, Elaine, is the single little orange robed monk climbing up the stairs with his umbrella. Wonderful capture. Another example how rain can be the photographer's friend.

Great framed and composed! Everything's totally sharp and I like the contrast of the big golden words and the little monk. The characters read 'Nan-mu-o-le' which is a Buddhist chant sth similar to 'God Bless You' in Christinity. The way I see is that the monk is reminded by the phrase as he heads back to his Pagoda. I've love to visit this place! TFS.

Wow Elaine! I admit, this is my favorite kind of picture, the strong graphism with a human touched added by your subject and you presence in the shot. The colours are fantastic, the signs on the wall, the simplicity. I love it!

Well worked careful compo, and the timing is perfect both for the position and pose of the monk on the steps. Nice one.

Hi Elaine - oh yes, the balance of the compo is perfect, the 4 circular characters balance the monk while the zigzag handrail and the vertical lines of the staircase take care of the geometric appeal, great work.

Hi Elaine, this is a wonderfully dynamic image, so brilliantly composed. Amidst this impressive mass of grey stone (floor, stairs, wall, balustrades, ....) you bring in, as if with a magic wand, a sparkle of life! Fantastic instant of these running up legs together with the movement of the orange robe. The cropped green leaves of the tree are also a great balance of your image. Cheers, --amz

Very effective composition. The orange touch add life in your picture and the symbols are very aesthetics.
