I just can't understand why Hong Kong people rush in luxury retail shops to shop, every change in season women buy shoes, bags, clothes and it keeps going on...again wait till the Summer Sale Season!
Seriously we live in a material world, we buy stuff coz we 'like to' even when the need is unnecessary...I have my own guilty pleasures too, though my awareness in the environment has grown this much and sharing this photo sees not only the beauty of the place we all live but also the rubbish side of reality...
Waste is a common problem of affluent societies. Especially when people can afford greater convenience and more purchases tend to throw away more rubbish. Hong Kong is no exception to this.
Hong Kong, like many developed places, has seen its wasteloads grow as its economy has grown. Municipal wasteloads have increased an average of about three per cent per year since 1986 - when the EPD (Environmental Protection Department) was formed - mirroring Hong Kong's rapid economic expansion over the same period. At the same time, the population has grown by more than one million people and each person is throwing away more waste. The per capita level of domestic waste has risen from 0.95 kilogrammes per person per day in 1990, to 1.11 kilogrammes in 2002.
Hong Kong is facing an imminent and serious waste problem. Among our municipal solid waste, more than 23 million plastic shopping bags are disposed of at our landfills every day. This translates into more than three plastic shopping bags per person per day, which is much higher than the figures of our overseas counterparts.

Jom,
I liked the thumb, got interested because of the title, and then I enjoyed reading your note very much. Especially because you write; "info gathered". Not a copy-paste but a personal note with a good source mentioning.
The photo is well chosen, the trash compacts more to the bottom, the face on the magazine, the colors are specs of light, and there is no real dirt to be seen.
Well done, the photo and the note!
regards,
David
Hi MP,
great photo- and artwork you are presenting here. And you had the courage to show the other side of life. Good note also. Compliments from Austria, Chris
Hello Jom,
Affluenza doesnt discriminate and its blind, especially to its byproducts. We certainly live in a material world now, we are dying to buy the newest, the biggest and the best and there are people dying because of out wants, we are killing our earth and the people within. I remember reading somewhere, 'If we could live simply, people could simply live'.
Thanks for sharing a thought provoking shot.
Kinf regards
Kamran
