For a change from Hong Kong shots I present you today my first shot from Lantau Island.I know it´s a typical postcard view(processed in HDR from one RAW file),but I think it shows the best how huge the Statue of the Buddha really is.
The statue is named Tian Tan Buddha because its base is a model of the Altar of Heaven or Earthly Mount of Tian Tan, the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. It is one of the five large Buddha statues in China. The Buddha statue sits on a lotus throne on top of a three-platform altar. It is surrounded by six smaller bronze statues known as "The Offering of the Six Devas" and are posed offering flowers, incense, lamp, ointment, fruit, and music to the Buddha. These offerings symbolize charity, morality, patience, zeal, meditation, and wisdom, all of which are necessary to enter into nirvana.
The Buddha is 34 metres (112 ft) tall, weighs 250 metric tons (280 short tons).

What a magnificent statue! It is so rare for a statue so huge and imposing to still be able to maintain its air of calm and serenity, but this statue does it well.
I love the point of view you chose here, the stairs lead into the shot perfectly, and the people give excellent scale to the image. The framing of the statue with the trees is perfect, adding a cool natural element to the entire scene. Really nicely seen and captured, this looks like an amazing place.
All the best

an amazing sense of scale in this wonderful shot. Love the squashed perspective which makes its magnificence all the more impressive. Immaculate detail and a perfectly composed and executed image. Imposing imagery!

Good evening Krzysztof,
I know this Budha and the guardian godesses around the mighty statue.
Your POV taken on a time when the sun was not directly above - the only one time there, I had to experience noon time sun.
268 stairs up, counted. nice taken an upwards perspective. Impressive place.

podoba mi sie umiejscowienie turystow/pielgrzymow na tym zdjeciu - zdecydowanie dodaja koloru a ponadto oddaja faktycznie wielkosc posagu, ktory goruje nad caloscia. Ladne obramowanie kompozycji zielenia. Bardzo dobrze zrobiony HDR - ostateczny efekt nie zatracil naturalnosci.

Olbrzymi ten Budda! Ładnie ujęta postać w perspektywie schodów, dobra głębia ostrości, dobrze pokazana wędrówka ludzi

That really is incredible - it looms over the crowd like something from a monster movie, yet it's the Buddha - peaceful and serene as always. Great framing through the trees here, with the flow of people providing a really impressive sense of scale and distance. I also really like how much negative space you've left on top, which I think helps to emphasize a sense of height. Thanks!

Hi Krzysztof ,
Now that's an imposing statue, the size is almost overwhelming! Love how you've framed it with the trees and included the tourists, and I'm sure some locals, in the foreground to give scale to this massive Buddha. This really is a quite impressive statue. Great light as well, I especially like the highlights on the face of the trees while a large portion of Buddah is shaded. It's very well balanced though, no heavy shadows or over-exposed areas. I would imagine this to be a peaceful attraction, and very welcoming for everyone to enjoy. Thanks for sharing this viewpoint. Have a great day.
All the best,

Witaj dear Krzysztof
What a funny photo, it looks like Buddha has just popped out from behind the hillside to say hi. Look, he's even waving at us! :) I would never have guessed this was HDR, so congrats for the subtle processing. The vertical frame is well chosen and the perspective looks great, with those converging lines drawing the eye towards the Buddha. Great shot and an interesting note too.
PS: The Polish lessons are not going as successfully as I'd hoped :) Not an easy language, and where Italian (which I speak) is so phonetic, I couldn't pick a language which is more un-phonetic than Polish. My friend Hannah who is trying to teach me some words nearly fell off her chair laughing at me trying to say Wroclaw in an Australian-Italian accent :) The weather in May in Sydney is usually a little rainy, but the temperature is very mild. Malgo will be travelling to the desert for alot of her trip, so May is a good time to go. It's a pity that she will only be in Sydney for 3 days.

Sensational in the POV you've captured this huge Buddha, from the bottom of the stairs still wins in perspective, the presence of people serve to give an idea of its size and also adds a touch of vitality to the image, I like it 've framed with trees on both sides of the monument.
Superb brightness of the beautiful day, the sharpness is also perfect.
Great job, I like it.
Enjoy a nice day.

That statue is indeed very huge!
The long staircase and the lines of people add scale to the picture.
Attractive framing with the greenery.
Best regards, Paul

Good use of the trees to frame but massive statue! Nice to have the people for scale. Good pov and dof with nice details. Well done, tfs.

I also visited Ngong Ping, and I was there in late afternoon, when this angle was in backlight.
You have better sidelight. Big size makes the statue really impressive, and people on the stairs give a good idea of the scale. Maybe I'd refer to see a bit more of stairs and less sky.

I always admire these huge Buddha statues (there are quite a lot of them in Asia) sitting on top of the world and blessing the mortals crawling at his feet:)
I like the way the trees frame the uphill climb to the statue here and that hazy blue light that makes Buddha look somewhat detached from the hustle beneath.
I see nothing wrong with the image having a postcard feel to it. I love postcards and it's a beautiful one:)
Wish you a happy Sunday
macjake (51262) 2013-04-06 11:49
entering Nirvana eh! :)
when will that happen for me? lol
postcard style or not, you know i like it.
When we visit these places, we would feel like something is missing from our galleries if we didn't get the shot.
If you wanted to show the immense size of the Buddha, perhaps reducing the skyline at the top - that would put more of an impact on the buddha...no? perhaps not? is just a thought.
The buddha looks pretty big as it is! :)
well done with the lighting and exposure

A fine vertical composition of this huge statue. The inclusion of the staircase in the foreground helps creating depth to the scene. The trees balances the symmetrical composition and frames the scene perfectly. Lovely work!
Best regards, Erling

s_lush (16132) 2013-04-07 1:56
You have chosen a very good composition to show how big the statue is. The perspective of staircase with people is an excellent additional compositional element and good scale to consider the statue's sizes. Perfectly good presentation of this interesting place!

I am back again almost fully charged by now after almost three weeks' absence! Your critiques are very much appreciated and tx to your email.
Very interesting piece of note backed up by an excellent shot to illustrate this religious sight and its prominent grand fig as central focal. I love your positioining, the low vp pointing upowards while the lively vivid colors popped out so stunningly in the foreground. There's a good sense of depth and is quite remarkable in abundance of greenery. You don't have to be religious to be impressed by the sheer scale of it. Hughly impressive, good work, Congrats TFS
