A daily life scene on the harbour in Hong Kong. I liked the red sails and how they contrasted against the green water and grey skies.

Ciao cara Lisa,
Yes, I agree: the contrast between those red sails and the pale green of the water and the grey sky is so beautifully subtle.
A very well composed picture with lovely soft light and fine natural colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
Funny, though, those sails just look far too small to be able to propel this fairly large boat through the water - so I presume that this rather ancient looking craft probably has a Volvo Penta diesel engine hidden away somewhere in its hold?

Despite the grey day you got a beautiful and colored image with well managed light. Lovely scene with this large boat. Very good sharpness to show us many details on the BG.

Hello Lisa, what I find interesting about your image is the juxtaposition of the old with the new and modern skyline of Hong Kong. Excellent sharpness and perfect composition on the moving water.
You must really love to travel.

A classic type of HK scene, and boy...have you ever done a fine job extracting the colors out of a "light-less" day.
The water looks like the Chicago River on St. Patricks Day. :) It certainly makes for that nice contrast you mentioned, and sure infuses life into an otherwise muted color palate.
You could have even titled this Green Day, but that might only confuse people that recognize the band. :) Looks like a big dragon on the seas...can these things fly?? O.K., enough bad humor...time to sail away. Have a good one.
Cheers from a land locked state,

This is a magic composition, the Chinese Junk Boat with modern HK building in BG, what else you can wish for an excellent photo.
You have been in right time at right place. Splendid photo.
Very well done my friend.
Wish you a nice Sunday.

Kia ora Lisa,
Great depiction of the old against the new. There is always something impressive & romantic about a traditional sail boat - even if it is running on motor! Cheers, Neil

Ciao cara Lisa,
We see you here now so rarely. These boats from Hong Kong look so attractive. And indeed, the contrast of the red sails with the misty background is beautiful. Wonderful presentation.
Have a nice Sunday

Très belle photo de ce bateau traditionnel dans la baie de Hong Kong. Jolis tons d'image.
CLODO (32612) 2014-06-22 0:02
Soft hues for this misty atmosphere, the old sailing boat is contrasting with the brand new sky scrappers, but I guess it has a powerfull engine considering the water aspect (almost no wind) and the wave at its front!
Nice HK souvenir

Hi Lisa - I've never been to HK (apart from the airport) but my husband spent 6 years of his childhood there. He always tells me such fascinating stories of life in the old colony. Things have changed enormously over the years but here we see a traditional junk (probably fitted out for tourists) that have plied the waters for centuries. I like the colours here, soft and atmospheric, and as you say the red and green accentuate each other.
Warm regards and thanks for the note.

Wow! What a superb capture of this wonderful scene! I love the background of that interesting ship fully filled by the modern buildings and stormy clouds. They created a fantastic visual impact with that ship. The mood of the scene is so magical and amazing! TFS!

l love this capture.
The view and composition are superb.
l like the contrats too:
- Old fishing boat and the modern huge city,
- Red, green, grey contrasts,
- Peaceful atmosphere but impressive "before storm" sky.
l like it!
Have a nice day

Almost 30 years ago I looked in vain for traditional djonks in Hong Kong harbour. This may be intended just for tourists but it still looks great along with the skyscrapers. Like you I am delighted with the fine balance of the mild, greyish colours.
snunney (90914) 2014-06-22 2:43
You have made excellent use of the red sails to create a wonderful vivid scene despite the grey sky. Fine presentation; I like it very much.
Just back from a trip to Malta where there is lots of Aperol Spritz on offer at the bars in Valletta. Tried two, three or four of them! A bit too sweet for me; I still prefer Campari and tonic, but when in Rome:-)

Nice shot ! I love the contrast between the traditional boat and the modern skyscrapers in the bay. Good exposure and shparpness. I think I would have used here a wider angle to let some space to the right of the boat, I find it too centered here. But I don't know the constraints you had when you took this picture.

Aha, so now I see where the pirate ship from the spooky beach went! This is beautiful, the ship truly looks like it straight from the set of a movie and is in such stark contrast to the mega modern metropolis behind. You have a perfect sense of movement in the ship, and the water is a most beautiful shade of jade green. The light in the sky is wonderful too, bright enough to illuminate the scene perfectly, yet gloomy enough to make it seem this ship has just come through some sort of spooky rip in the fabric of time.
Perfect combination of shots, love it!
I raise a wheat juice to your skills!
All the best

Old and new! like the vivid colour of the huge junk - synonymous to Hong Kong- against almost mono greyish concrete jungle making a good colour foreground stand out superbly. Great that you managed the weather condition really well. Excellent capture, tfs

A very impressive shot, capturing the sailing vessel from this POV, with a lovely contrast, the old style boat, with the modern skyscrapers in the background. It's just as if visitors from the past would come unexpectedly to the present, yesterday tourists to today's world, in some way. Lots of detail and sharpness on the junk, nicely filling the frame, heading diagonally towards the urban background. The red sails make for a perfect contrast with the other elements. Well composed and captured.

Hi Lisa, very good photography on this gray day in this beautiful and interesting typical Chinese boat, very well captured in this interesting image, with good sharpness, nice color and light. Very good and interesting job well done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good morning and happy start to the week.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.

photoray (13719) 2014-06-23 7:39
Attractive image especially the 'junk' sailboat cruising in front of the very crowded and modern Hong Kong high rises.
I would prefer seeing Hong Kong's buildings from the water, and this would be a fine vessel, taking its time and connected to history.
thanks for sharing,
ikeharel (64041) 2014-06-23 8:17
The pink/brown sails of the sampan, beautifully and prominently contrast the grey sky and the scrapers on Victoria side, Lisa.
Most amazing location in HK, about 4000 vessels of all sizes cross the waterway daily.
Intriguing and impressive photo, inspite the everyday smog/fog/mist prevailes over town.
rogerl (1544) 2014-06-23 13:27
Lisa, I loved this photo the moment I saw it. And after studying it, I'm still not sure why. Part of it is the clarity of the foreground boat against the somewhat hazy buildings and sky, some of it is the culture contrast between those two. Lovely shot, perfectly developed. Thanks.

Hello Dear Lisa,
This is an absolute beauty. The boat looks superb with the city in the BG.Superb image with excellent framing and colors.TFS.

I almost forgot...well i DID forget that you visited China not too long ago!
I like reading John's comments as he's so correct about the small size of the sail...looks wrong to me too. but i guess its just not fully retracted thats all.
So is this some sort of touristy cruise boat which you pay for by the hour or something? must be...many of those in Santorini too.
the grey sky as you mentioned gave the perfect backdrop to allow the red sails to shine through...fun pic.
You're so right about the loud conversations in Italy :)
we experienced that too. Kinda scary at first lol

very good color contrast, old ship and skyscrapers, very well done
Wish you a nice day

A classic and beautiful scene of Hong Kong. Nice boat and great background.

In spite with the covered sky I note a very good lights ambiance on the boat and the sea
Very good frame quality
Best and kind regards

a fantastic and interesting ship that is so characteristic of this part of the world that you have captured excellently. Your POV works very well and the management of the difficult light is outstanding. What I like best is the contrast of the colors. My compliments!
mkamionka (32979) 2014-07-16 5:54
very attractive presentation. Not only is the old stylish boat contrasting nicely with the modern city behind but also the clouds seems so pleasantly smoothed as opposed to the crispy sharp other elements.
serp2000 (42268) 2014-07-29 4:02
Wow! I like it! This grey sky and the city create excellent background for this ancient ship. Yes, just impressive contrast! The red sails remind me a dragon's wings ;) Good presentation of HK!
Greetings from Russia!
