Two Icons, a photo from Hong Kong, South

Photographer's Note

This photo was taken on a hazy morning at Tsim Sha Tsui pier in Kowloon.You can see here for me two iconic for Hong Kong´s landscape objects-the Star Ferry in the foreground and 2IFC(The International Finance Centre)in the background.It´s for me also a great juxtaposition how well harmonizes in the city the modernity with tradition and history.

Hello Krzysztof,

I was attracted to your shot as a thumbnail and was not disappointed full size.
I like the contrasts: the old and the new, the clear and the hazy, the tall and the small.
The shot has fine composition.
The clarity and the haze convey a mood.

This is too much my friend! Delicious contrast between the boat and the skyline, two different atmospheres and realities. I like as well the vertical frame, so suitable for the ocasion. An excellent work.

Hi Krzysztof,

Brilliant idea to choose a vertical frame which emphasizes the immense height of this building so perfectly well. As a fan of big buildings, I say wow, they dont get much bigger than this!
Excellent how you have managed the light too, with the ferry in bright light and perfect clarity, while the city is shrouded in mist (or is that smog?) This city looks like an absolutely amazing place, thanks for sharing your vision of it here.

The mist is just wonderful here, Krzysztof - like a matte painting in the background. Great composition, and very inviting. The opposite shore here is like a mystery waiting to be explored - very anticipatory. Thanks!

zobaczyc takie miasto to byloby wspaniale. Ale pomazyc mozna. Piekna pionowa kompozycja z niesamowitymi wysokimi wiezowcami, ktore sa niesamowocie wysokie. Nie mam porownania ale wydaje mi sie ze te wiezowce sa chyba wyzsze niz w NY. Czy tak odczuwales? Takie robia na mnie wrazenie. Kompozycja piekna. Na pierwszym planie statek na drugim planie drapavze chmur w gestej mgle, ktora wprowadza w ciekawy tajemniczy nastroj. Bardzo ladna i ciekawa praca. Super wykonanie. Bardzo mi sie podoba. Czekam na nastepne zdjecie.

The stark contrast of misty diffuse high rise buildings across the bay and the spot brightly lit clear ferry boat the foreground make for a captivating image. I'm really surprised by this photo.
surprised how well the final product is.
Having the strong contrast in clearness and bg hazyness makes for an attractive scene, and easily creates a fg/bg seperation.
even a smoggy photo looks good!

You had a very good intention, Krzysztof, but intense mist prevailed HK sky on that day.
This is the normal situation there - and you have to be extremely lucky with a nicert weather. So the choise to take the photo was right, anyway.
Impressive scraper dominating HK skyline, view from Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, well premeditated.

The overall impression is that of a monochrome capture but the nice green boat in the bottom part creates an amazing effect.

Awesome capture of this world famous port city! The vertical format worked well with composition. I heard about the smog problem in China, that's very sad situation. Good lighting in spite of the haze and good dof with nice details. Well done, tfs.

Another fine shot from Hong Kong. The haze creates a nice mood in this lovely scene. I like the difference in lighting between the fg and the bg here. The clear view of the ferry stands in a nice contrast to the bg with its dimmed light and colours, thanks to the haze. Totally agree with you about the juxtaposition, that a great feature here too. You make a good point about the juxtaposition with modern and antique. The tight frame works well and the colours of grey and green work so well together. Man that's a serious amount of smog and haze there. Amazing how something so bad for the environment can look so good.

I take off my hat again. A composition is superb! A short but informative note and excellent illustration, it reminds me Shanghai cityscape but Hong Kong has got not so big area for life and buildings. Impressive background!

You have made a good attempt here, choosing to go in tight on the ship. The composition works well, and the focus with deep DOF draws the attention not only to the ship but also to the tol buildings behind. The ship itself is very well-exposed. Asymmetrical arrangement creates excellent balance and harmony.The hazy atmosphere add nice hue to the scene. Ecellent!!!

I really hope that the haze disappeared later in the day. I see so often pictures of Hong Kong with a lot of fog.
This picture reminds me of waking up early in the morning while it's still dark and then a spectacular urban landscape unfolds very slowly in front of your eyes.
That International Finance Centre certainly is very tall. Is it possible to visit one of the upper floors?

What a difference from the skyline I saw in Hong Kong in 1983. Your composition with the foggy morning as the setting is quite spectacular. Your succinct, albeit informative, is note appreciated.
