ATS (Audible Traffic Signals), systems for the visually impaired pedestrians installed in the pedestrian crossings around Hong Kong.

Have you crossed the streets of Central especially during the appalling rush hour or the intersection of the busy Causeway Bay during weekends? Hong Kong can be horrendous for travellers with disabilities. The excitement and the thrill of discovering this vibrant city, particularly the walks in Central, Causeway Bay and Kowloon, one who is handicapped finds himself in the middle of a crowded street thus getting around with an injury or in a wheelchair is very grueling. Many of the disabled think of themselves as bothersome to many who endlessly walk the busy streets of Hong Kong.

The noise of pedestrians, vehicular traffic and the audible device has filled the air and now becomes a part of the busy lifestyle of Hong Kong, tik-tak, tik-tak, tik-tak...

About the ATS:

The function of audible traffic signals (ATS) is to provide indication to the visually impaired persons (VIPs) on the prevailing pedestrian signals states at the crossings. In late 2004, Transport Department (TD) completed the territorial-wide installation of the new electronic audible traffic signals (eATS). The new eATS is capable of responding automatically to the ambient noise level, i.e. its output will be higher under noisy environment and will reduce automatically if the environment is quiet. In addition, the eATS is equipped with a tactile unit which indicates the prevailing pedestrian signal states by means of different vibrating patterns. With these features, the eATS is capable of providing 24-hour services to the VIPs while minimizing the noise nuisance to the nearby residents.

Info gathered from the Transport Department - The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region
