in a city that never sleeps...

This aloof woman had probably finished her drink and was then walking down the 2nd main street of the place.

Lan Kawi Fong, this part of Central district, is the most famous drinking/night out place in Hong Kong; also one of the best in Asia. The "Xin Tian Di" drinking area of Shanghai was heavily influenced by Lan Kawi Fong.

This place attracts many foreign tourists and the pups/bars would be packed with people on Friday nights.

However, most local people (apart from students) don't go to this place. The major customers are "Gweilos", therefore the language spoken here is predominantly English. A very interesting place, a must-go if one visits Hong Kong.

" Gweilo (click to see cartoon)" ;) is a Cantonese term meaing 'ghost chap', and this refers to the Caucasian people.
Ghosts (...as in Chinese movies/Chinese customs) have pale skin and green/blue/red eyes. Therefore, a typical Westerner is linked to a 'Ghost'. It used to be considered an offensive ethnic slur, but now even the foreigners call themselves "Gweilos"!

There's a WIDE ANGLE version in the WorkShop with a Gwei-mui & friend.

Noise reduced.*

Despite the rather startled expression of this young lady, I really like this shot. You've composed the shot well and the out of focus city lights make a great background.
Good work.
Ben

Hi Cheuk.
This daily portrait is great. The photo is lovely sharp. The lens helps, but your composition gives to the capture the major meaning.

Excellente photo Cheuk Hin
quelle netteté sur cette dame qui contraste bien avec ce fond flou. Bravo pour ce post. J'aime beaucoup
Xavier

Hello Cheuk,
I love this shot. Great DOF.
Very well composed, sharp.
Excellent work.
Best regards,
Fabrice

Hi Cheuk
Excellent capture at night, is very real and nice POV.Many regards, Rafael

A wonderful portrait. She looks like lost in her own world. I like this mood. The scenery behehind her in the blur with a nice colourful lightning. Nice image! Nino

Hi Cheuk,
Thanks to this nice bokeh you got a great portrait of a woman at night. I really like the blurred background with many lights and a bunch of people. It indeed enhances the idea that Hong Kong is always in activity. It reminds me Tokyo at night.
Thanks for sharing,
Fanny

Very inspiring and interesting image.
I like the whole mood of the evening and softness.
The colouring is very pleasant too.
Thanks, Agnieszka

In the serie street life I like this nightshot, very well balanced colors with short DOF to spot her out against the OOF colorful street with sparkeling lights. She got a wondering look.
Very well done Cheuk
Henk

Cheuk,
you are stepping on steps of Francis.
Nice focued lady with expression less face in night life area with shinning street lights.

Well done.
-Shailendra

Hey Cheuk,
I like this than the other wide angle shot, you must have used a fast lens and high ISO. You got her perfectly, with nice bokeh. Smooth and clean image...despite the subject moving! I haven't learned this yet...
Regards,
JHCris

Hi Cheuk

I love Hong Kong! The perfect dof & fg sharpness on the woman, & the o.o.f. bg are marvellous. Tfs!

Hi Cheuk,
Great night shot and nice expression of the girl !
I thought the district was called Lam Kwai Fong. I was there, it was very nice, many people in the streets late in the night and bars.

Hi CheukHIn
I never cease to be amazed with your photographs...excellent use of DOF to capture what is a routine subject into a great photo...surprise as to how she was not aware of you taking the photograph. Great placement of the subject & the hint of reflection on her sunglasses
Regards
Angshu

Hi Cheuk, great sharpness on the key figure in this shot, DOF balance is nicely done, suggesting the party mood you described in your note but leaving most of it to our imagination with the strong bokeh. Wonder what that smug is in the lower right hand corner, just a piece of debris on the ground perhaps?

Good mornign Cheuk, Not only a very good daily life scene, but with your well balanced colors and shallow DOF, she satnds apart from the crowd lost in her thoughts in this busy street. Interstign note too.

Hi Cheuk
A nice shot with very good quality. The ISO 800 has come out well with little noise. The picture is nice and crisp and the colours are good too. The lady's expression is a little vacant though, as if her thoughts are miles away. I suspect too much drink eh? Nice capture and good framing. Your note is very informative too.
Cheers
Aubrey

She really looks startled, Cheuk! But is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, I mean, it is what it is. The graphic qualities if the shot are extremely high, and the atmsphere powerfully evoked. I would even say: there is a HK kind of lightin at work there. All I know is that this is a very arresting picture, it really stops one in one's tracks, which is a hell of a lot better than "indifferent".
All the best,
Francis

Hi CheukHin. It seems I always show up late to leave comments. But I hope you don't mind. Sharp clear shot, even though it was taken at night at ISO800! I really started thinking about buying a lense for my E300. You took a shot of her but she doesn't stare at you, that's funny. I think I like the colours and sharpness in the photo, than compositions. Great shot again!

very nice portrait, Cheuk
I like the light and the colors
wonderful shot

Hi Cheuk Hin,
I have mixed feelings about this one.
First, let me go through what I don't really like. I would cut a bit of the upper part. This way, her pretty face would be less centered and there would be less of the lights of the background. Those lights are an essential part, but a bit to big a part, IMHO. The other thing that I don't really like is the color of her face. Was she sick? She is kind of grey and green. Or is it my monitor that play games with me?
Now that I have put out of the way what I did not like, let me tell you that, in the whole, I like this photo. The focus is right on the spot, this woman expression is worth a lot. She doesn't look at you directly, but that doesn't bother me. I like the way the light are slightly touching her shoulder and arm.
Claire

Hi Cheuk,
I love the way the woman walked into your frame. It's also nice how her skin is not too sharp but creamy. Great contrast with the background, and thanks for the note as well.
