This is what resulted with a shutter speed of 1 second using an aperture value of 2.8. An amusing effect that captures length of time the shutter opens to let light pass through the lens to the focal plane. What makes the image dynamic is the fast moving double decker bus that crosses the composition. The ‘laser beam’ looking like rays of light that it creates adds graphic touch to the image. One of my many experimental night shots taken in the business district of Central. The popular buildings from the right are the Bank of China, Cheung Kong Centre and at foreground the preserved old Bank of China and the HSBC headquarters. Shot taken along Connaught Road fronting Statue Square.

My title may not literally refer to the image but its amazing how light can be so fascinating in the world of photography.

Hope you like it.

Definition of Speed of Light

The speed of light when it passes through a transparent or translucent material medium, like glass or air, is slower than its speed in a vacuum. The ratio of c to the observed phase velocity is called the refractive index of the medium. General relativity explains how a gravitational potential can affect the apparent speed of distant light in a vacuum, but locally light in a vacuum always passes an observer at a rate of c.

Want to see a demo showing the speed of light on a scale model of Earth and the Moon, about 1.2 seconds. Check the gif image The Speed of Light

Hello Jom!
You know what would have been very very cool? A man/woman going toward your left who would have passed just between you and that dd. the light beams would have looked as if they were going out of that person...I realize I have difficulties explaining what I mean...I hope you get it...
As usual, you master the light in night condition. You've really become a master at it. The point of view you chose is also interesting. It seems like you were quite low on the ground so that we look like ants looking toward the skyscrapers.
Another good night shot of yours. I hope you are doing fine my friend,
Marc

Interesting photo this one, Jom. It's good to see famous landmarks taken in a different way.
The sharpening you've applied here is a nice bonus as well.

Hi John

From a new POV, the tone is totally different but it works, futuristic, modern. Well done.

Bonne journée.

Excellent travail! L'effet obtenu est vraiment superbe et la photo est très bien réalisée techniquement et ce procédé très intéresant.
Amicalement

Hi Jom,
Beautiful shot of static and moving city lights. Dynamic upwards angle. Tones of artificial lights are well in harmony with dark blue sky.

Hello dude,
Very well done on this captured on Speed of Light!
the sharpness and details is awesome, dude!
something to learn from you and really thanks for sharing
have a great weekend, dude!
cheers
Tony

Terrific effort! Top class!

Hi Jom,
It may look a little bright at places but otherwise the passing bus light trails dynamism transmits well the night frenzy in HK, good result achieving this with a compact.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

This is another great shot Jom. Thinking outside the box. Love the streaking color creating a very "artisticky" effect. A very original view on Hong Kong also. Color throughout is excellent, as well as sharpness and composition. A great looking shot...I am trying to find something to nitpick about, but it looks really well done. Maybe a bit dark up top, but as I said, nitpicking...

Another one of your "not so good" shots? (I see it was taken in 2004. If so, you may want to start going through your oldies and start selling them!!!

Nice
John

PS - here's another shot like yours from Hong Kong that I thought of when I saw yours (just in case you didn't see it).

PSS - Talked to Rich a little while back - he was complaining about moving into a new house and just got married and painting the fence...blah,blah,blah...he said he'll be back soon but too busy now...talk about screwed up priorities...

hello, jom. very nice capture and an interesting effect. i find it fascinating how the "opposite of speed" (slow shutter speed) creates an illusion of speed. nice colors, excellent DOF and great composition. a great note too. TFS.

kristaps
