[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
January 2006, Aberdeen Fish Market, Hong Kong

Dogs patrol the carpark of the Aberdeen Fish Markets in the mid-afternoon, during a lull in the day's trading. The dogs are ships' mates on the fishing vessels moored to the wharf of Aberdeen's protected harbour and they wander the market with a commanding air, letting all visitors know that this place is undoubtedly their kingdom on dry land.

Not much time to critique at the moment (I try to take critiquing seriously so it's challenging though insightful and fun) but I do fully appreciate your comments and ideas.

Ugh, another tilted shot. Don't know what happened, but all through January and February I found it hard to keep the camera level...

Well, ALL my tilting put end to end does't come close to THIS, Mike. You go all the wayt and create a genuine diagonal down the middle right to left. Somehow in your skilled hands, it works. I also find your notes to be of the highest quality - you've got a voice there that is so natural one can "hear" you talking to us, and boy, you know how to tell a tale.
I like the forlorn look here made more so by your choice of high contrast BW, and the precise position of the dog on the right, barking at us...
Brilliant stuff.
Cheers,
Francis

Hi Mike,
After the comment of Francis, there does not remain to me great any more a deal to add, with share which I like really this shot...
well seen
Philippe

Good composition in this photo.
I like the emptyness of the photo, they way you have managed to capture the dogs in this picture gives them a very commanding feel.
It is a bit confusing with the tilted view though, but then again, to me it almost feels like it's supposed to be like that.

hi Mike, i love the tilt here, pretty strong, true, but helps to arrange all the lines in the right angles, plus gives a different point of view to an otherwise dull and depressing view.
best regards

INTENSE urbanity. To the point of being scary. I just love that grey, stark background. I have some pigeon photos but that doesnt come close to the intensity of hese dogs. Let me add this to my favorites.

Cold and scary view with the grainy and urban building view in the background. The tilt invites alot of movements in the shot, the combination of the buildings and trucks and the dog's directions are beautiful.

would a chiropractor help with holding the camera holding?

I wish I was as good as you with daily life dog pictures, I mean looking at the situation there is probably nothing interesting there, yet you are able to pull of an interesting images (let the sleeping dogs lie being a prime example). Having said that I am glad I am using a laptop, easy for me to simply lift it and turn it around ;-), find your tilt a bit excessive, I would also prefer one more pooch in the foreground, head sticking out of bottom left corner would be perfect.

Peter
PS, no wonder I enjoy reading your critiques, also take pride in writing them and take it seriously ;-)

Nice shot Mike, when it comes to b&w film still rules for me. I wish you were a little closer to the dogs and that there wasn't quite so much foreground but a good shot overall.

Would make wonders in a square format, especially with that tilt (what tilt? says Furagrand...). Try cropping the bottom of your image by a third and you'll see what I mean... at the present situation, I feel the bottom is quite lowering my enthusiasm at it, lowering is the word, it's like a disappointing aftermath, my viewing going down, such as my moral...

One question : have you spotted HIM? You know who I am speaking of.

interesting capture and angle of shoot! I still have the feeling you are overtilting a bit lately... a litle less tilt would suit better IMO;-) I still like this one very much for the deserted space behind the dog and the city skyline in the far

Bonjour Mike,
It's the kind of pictures that always are intriguing me because they impress me without knowing the right reason why they do.
Maybe a combination of the choice of B&W, with that grain, the point of view with that extreme tilt, the emptyness at the bottom, the unusual idea... But it works, definately!
Amicalement - Viviane

I thought is was NY :) Well, great urban shot. The tilt, the choice of B&W is very good here? Yeah, the tilt is really great with the everything placed at the right location. Tilted but balanced :) I love it Mike !

The tilt is extreme but works quite well here. THe profusion of diagonal lines thus created breaks gently with the two dogs, also on diagonals yet beatifully balanced as counterpoint to the severe lines. Very nice contrast.

This is a really great picture. The fur of the dog's tail is my favorite detail. Even without this beautiful tilt (its done very well in my opinion), it seems like some of those buildings would be tipping. Great lighting. Good work.

Rosie

Lots of great stuff in your gallery lately Mike. It's outstanding how you can turn simple scene in strong composition, well taught. The tilt works beautifully in this triangle compo. Great work.

Hola Mike, parece que está un poco inclinada pero es otra forma de ver las cosas... en ocasiones un poco torcidas.

Buen trabajo.

Un saludo.
