Photographer’s Note

Kids playing on an improvised raft in Sanya harbour. Even with a lot of especially Chinese and Russian tourism to the resorts by Sanya's surrounding beaches, Hainan is quite poor, and most people live by farming or fishing.
The island has for long been considered a malaria infested outpost in China, but the Norhtern area around Haikou was developed as one of China's Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Even so, a lot of the construction plans were only half or never built, and others stand empty. A sign of the economic optimism of the 1990s, which never quite realized itself on this island.
