Photographer's Note

McDonalds reflected in a pool in Yangshuo. This wasn't here in 1999 when I last visited, & the former 5 star hotel at left (Paradeso) has fallen into disrepair & is now condemned, & overgrown with weeds. The old hotel's grounds are now a carpark. I have mixed feelings about fast food places in prime tourist areas. Perhaps a less prominent position would have been better? For a comparison of how it looked in 1999, please see the workshop. Some would say progress, others not.

The bridge & street at right are still decorated with red paper lanterns, for Chinese New Year, which fell on 22 January.

But the background karst peaks still look as lovely as ever.

Hello Chris,
excellent presentation of the place with the refletions of the backdrop Mts to are reflected on the calmly surface of the pool in Yangshuo.The only cacophony is the foundation of the Mc Donalds in the area.

Hello Chris,

I have similar feelings. I remember being taken on a tour of Paris and having a McDonalds pointed out because it had silver lettering rather than gold; did we care!!!
Despite the big 'M', this is a fine shot. The soft greys surrounding the building produce a sense of calm and tranquility. Love how the vibrant colours in the f/g gradually blur into the mist of the b/g; great sense of depth.

Hello Chris - While the shot is good with wonderful reflections, despite the overcast day, I have to say, I'm not that keen on the prominence of McDonald's .... somehow it takes the magic away from the stunning location doesn't it? Mind you it does add a nice splash of colour contrast!! Warm regards Rosemary

Hi Chris,

The reflections on the water are assets to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the buildings. The mountains are framing well the city. The afternoon light is bringing out the colors. Have a nice day.

this is a strange and evocative image especially on reading the commentary. Such amazing scenery and a sign of the times I suppose. Why McDonalds cannot present themselves in a more aesthetic way is beyond me. Not easy to clone them out either!! Beautiful shot despite the big M.

The reflection is perfect, the water was not a ripple. The colors and sharpness make this picture interesting and fun show, before the background to the visibility reduced. Very nice and good achievement. Bravo.

Oh noooo, Mac Donalds in such a place! It should be prohibited by law. The place in 1999 looked much better. it happens very often that McDonalds and more often some banks who have a lot of money spoil the place with their buildings. It would be such a beautiful photo if the yellow M's (ten of them altogether!) were not present. Nice bridge.

McDonald's is popping up everywhere in Asia. Nice image with clear reflection in the water. Lovely backdrop of the mountains which is also reflected in the water. I like the splash of yellow and red from McDonald's. Beautiful atmosphere.

J'avoue que c'est triste de voir un McDo dans un endroit si magnifique. La photo de 1999 nous montrait un paysage beaucoup plus intéressant. La réflexion sur l'eau est superbe par contre, et très bien photographiée.

Hello Chris,

Down with progress, if fast food restaurants replace historical sites. But I cannot be a Luddite about it — who would have thought we would have computers (smart phones in our pockets) and send photos and critiques around the world at the speed of light. I set up a group theme, Mobile Phones, recently, that would not have been possible in 1999. This is a superb shot, but I like the 1999 version better.

Chris! All I can say is WOW! Seeing both photos with in a different time is really amazing! Talk about change, development or whatever you call that is. Seeing Mcdonalds in this kind of area or region is simply fascinating, you can see how the western world is really penetrating every corner of this planet. I will never be surprised if one day Mcdonalds will open a branch in Pyongyang! LOL
Anyway, of course, everybody would prefer the workshop photo as the authenticity of the scenery was preserved, I guess seeing modern structures are not that appealing to these kind of views, IMO. Anyway, thanks for sharing this one! Very enlightening post!
