The Karst Mountains and caves in Guilin are one of the few places on earth that displays the beauty of huge, naturally forged Karst hills and caves. The hills and caves have been an ancient attraction with some inscriptions on its walls dated 729 AD in the Tang Dynasty. The beauty of the place and its imposing structures made this an almost spiritual place to visit and experience. Today, thousands of people visit the site each year and attracting thousands more as the news of its beauty is being spread all over the world.
The Karst topography in Guilin is one of the largest in the world and thanks to the receding water from hundreds of millions of years ago, the gulf in Guilin bared hills made from limestone and dolomite rocks. As the hills protruded in the newly revealed landscape, rain, wind, and countless rivers develop the unique contours of the hills and the magnificent structures in the caves. All of these took 70 million years for nature to pull off. As acidic water slowly eats the bedrock by flowing to the fractures on the ground, these cracks became wider and allow more water to pass through them accelerating the formation of underground drainage creating caves and underground rivers. The Guilin Karst landscape is a classic example of large scale bedrock dissolution process, dissolving more bedrock than it eventually left out. This made the towering Karst hills possible.
In fact the sharp, slender slopes made the Guilin site very unique from other Karst landscapes of the world. This explains the extensive underground structures – a lot of water was channeled from the hills to the ground creating enormous cave complexes. The scale of the hills and the huge number of interconnected caves and rivers made this area a wonderful place to just be amazed of the natural sites on your every turn.
This picture has been taken from the top of the Fubo Hill and the weather was not that great. In fact for next few days it had rained non stop.

hello Kamila, you choose a perfect POV for your picture, the mix of karst formations and buildings is very interesting, commonly karst formations are photographeted in jangshuo in a more natural enviroment and it can get quite boring after a while to see these picture, instead you show them in a different perspective
ikeharel (73561) 2014-05-12 8:22
I feel benevolent this evening, Kamila, but seriousely - could not pass this without notice.
A stunning earth formation with the big rocks, beautifully built shrine on the waterfront of an artificial pond, a notable level-differentials to the river on right, and the colors !! You had managed fantastic image inspite the mist/fog/smog hang above the valley and town.
lousat (93776) 2014-05-12 8:39
Hi Kamila,a very nice place but completely invaded by concrete, the view is truly beautiful and i like the quality of your pic despite the difficult light and the great detail everywhere despite the distance, interesting post! Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Weather wasn't perfect, but you still managed to come up with a great shot. When we were there, everything was shrouded in mist and drizzle.
Great picture! Thanks for sharing.

A beautiful composition of one of China's most emblematic landscapes.
I'd always imagined it like ancient chinese paintings - serene, beautiful light and weather... Your shot is a jarring reminder of reality - atmospheric smog, huge cities and astounding nature all side by side.
You've done an excellent job considering weather factors, and a fantastic POV that takes in closeup details of vegetation, reflections of classical architecture on water... receding into the distance with that strange marriage of karst hills and concrete structures - Well done!

Hi Kamila, lovely view of this interesting and beautiful place, very well composed and captured by a great POV with very good and nice photo. An interesting image of a nice place, with good sharpness, light, color and quality. Nice good job perfectly done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this interesting work.
Good evening and happy start to the week.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.

I was adviced to stay in Yangshuo rather than Guilin, and maybe that was a wise decision, but from this spot Guilin looks fantastic too, although I can trace the ordinary big, dirty city in the background. The combination of spectacular hills, traditional houses and a green heart-shaped pond is superb. As always you have composed and cropped this perfectly. The colours are fine, although we can see that the weather was far from perfect.

Niesamowite zestawienie ciekawej architektury z natura. Wpisane w miasto góry, a raczej odwrotnie bo to gory byly wczesniej robi niesamowite wrazenie.
Ciekawa, interesujaca praca.

The mounts in the middle of the city creates a nice landscape, so uncommon in a town. A pity the weather was not great when you visited this beautiful place, it's a little dark. Nevertheless, it's a wonderful POV you've reached.

Truly informative note introducing this exelent POV of the impressive Guilin landscape where with not good light you managed to post a goood composition with the rampart going all the way back and dividing river and lagoon
Good sharpnees, like the red tower and it reflects
Congrats for a quite creative post of Guilin

Geia sou Kamila
Don't you think so much moisture from rain and surrounding rivers created an heart-shaped green lake wich is the main attraction of your picture, surrouinded by those strange boulders growing in town?!
Nothing is more seductive than the unknowned!
Giustiniani (3632) 2014-05-12 14:04
photoray (13981) 2014-05-12 15:01
Intriguing mystic scene with the giant Karst monoliths rising as if from the village within an aura of mist and classical Chinese architecture.
Hope to visit here someday to feel and touch the geology and history.
abmdsudi (55722) 2014-05-12 20:18
You are close to the edge with this spectacular dose of vertigo sweeping the eye all the way down....
A rewarding shot despite the weather condition with strong interest well put together. I love speck of vivid colours which serve as strong anchors adding so much impact and vigour. A well-defined lens work at its best, exposed to good effect with mass of detail to savour. Contrast to grey sky is just great. Wonderful shot :))

Wonderful this great panoramic, allowing us to recreate the view of the city and its famous large rounded rocks, covered with vegetation, a stunning POV with this pond in the foreground and the great pagoda on the other side to give the oriental touch the composition.
Very pretty color, which gives a lot of life to the image.
A magnificent brightness management, sharpness also
is perfect for enjoying the details.
Very well seen and well taken.
All the best.

ourania (47910) 2014-05-14 14:00
through your picture and note it's easily understood why this area is considered "an almost spiritual place". Your picture has amazing depth and perspective, our eyes sweep the view greedily, there are so many fascinating details. You managed to enclose a lot of attractive features, the history of thousands of years. Excellent details emerge from the subtle mist and the colours are wonderfully moody. There's mystery and fascination and I have the feeling that the longer I explore the frame the more interesting subjects I'll discover. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,
InasiaJones (31566) 2014-05-14 19:38
I couldn't imagine a better point of view to present this beautiful place, if it wasn't invaded by so much concrete buildings that look awkward in such a natural splendor.
It is quite interesting to see how the landscape, the traditional architecture and the dreary buildings are living side by side, revealing a complete lack of urbanism and planning.
Still, there's something magical about it, because of the contrast from nature beauty against man-made ugliness. The weather surely contribute to this dismal feeling, which from a photographic point of view isn't negative, as this image has an edge, a special mood.

very nice the panoramic view of this section of Guilin that is the first time that i see.I was there seven years ago but did not see this spectacular and panoramic view of this beautiful place. The pagoda domiantes the scene with its reflection on the calmy surface of the pond making the scene even more effective.Well done.

Those unusual mountain formation in China and southeast Asia really intrigue me, maybe someday I will visit them. Beautiful landscape and architectures unfortunately you also captured the infamous smog. But the details of the near buildings are awesome. Well done, tfs.
williewhistler (16398) 2014-05-15 11:01
whilst the weather may not have been the best for you it has helped to create a special atmosphere around the most spectacular landscape, the muted colours and clear details are delightful to view and enjoy.
Kind regards Les.

Well, you may not have experienced optimal weather conditions, but it definitely does not take away from the awe inspiring view and natural formations presented with this shot. In fact, I actually like the heavy sky in this case...it feels to add a bit of mystery, as if the city we see is cloaked in hidden treasures and only found by those who know of it from old stories passed down from one generation to another. :) There goes my mind again, back on track now...:) A fantastic position to take in the grandeur of the locale. Very well done! Enjoy the new day. All the best.

From you well chosen high POV we can see that these huge karst mountains are located in the middle of the city of Guilin.
I find it a very nice view to have such rocks or mountains in the city. Rio is another place that offers such beautiful views.
The reflection of the pagoda is exactly on the right place on the picture.
At the right side we also find water but with another colour.
Best regards, Paul

this is wonderful, one of your best photos for sure. The place is spectacular - it could be right out of a fairytale. Excellent composition and light management. oryginalna prezentacja z tego znanego miejsca.
daddo (27044) 2014-05-26 16:56
Hi Kamila. What amazes me in your image, unlike many others that I have seen of the hills, is the congestion of houses where houses seem to have occupied every square metre of flat land. I hope that a national park in the same area has saved the natural beauty of this unique place. The lack of blue sky has created a moody image with ice hues. Best wishes. Klaudio.
SnapRJW (31629) 2014-05-27 0:24
Hello Kamila - I'm catching up with TE after a short absence. To be honest you have posted some wonderful shots recently, it is difficult to know which to comment on first. This one is super, I like the POV which gives a very good feel for the karst studded urban environment and is something I have not seen before. The interplay of landscape and cityscape is fascinating. What a fabulous shot.
jmdias (65659) 2014-05-28 7:10

well, I have to say, you've come back from China with some pretty darn good photos!
I hope you're very proud of them!
love these shots because they're full-frame type, no dead spaces, the frame is full from corner to corner and side to side.
great pov, the height you took this from worked out so well. It's so cool to see the city and nature so close to each other. wonderful photo

Exhibited a very beautiful landscape. Clarity and depth of the well performed. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

Missed this one. A superb high pov with good sharpness and excellent colour and saturation. I usually head straight to Yangshou rather than Guilin. The traditional multi-storied pagoda and its reflection make a superb focal point. Nice sharpness too. Tfs!
