The boomtown of Shenzhen is situated just across the border of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Originally a fishing village it was promoted to a Special Economical Zone (SEZ) in 1979 as an experiment with capitalism governed by communism, by the late Deng Xiaoping. The project was a huge success, and the city has a reputation for being one of the most rapidly growing cities in the world, ever.
If you are in Hong Kong it is relatively simple to visit Shenzhen. The train will take you there in less than an hour, and you can obtain a short time visa for the SEZ at the railway station in Shenzhen. Many people come here from Hong Kong to shop for cheaper designer products and pirated goods. This influx of money has of course also attracted lots of touts, beggars and thieves so it pays to be vigilant.
