Majianglong Village Cluster:

"Situated on the flatland on the eastern coast of Tanjiang River, the Majianglong Village Cluster is under the administration of Baihe township. It is composed of 5 villages: Yong'an & Nan'an villages of the Huang Family, and Qinglin, Hedong & Longjiang villages of the Guan Family. Yong'an Village was established during the Qianlong period (1736-1795) In the early years, it was known as 'Fengsuilang' which bears the symbolic meaning of 'good harvest every year'. They renamed the place Majianglong after 1949. A large number of the villagers have emigrated to the USA, Canada, Mexico & Australia. The 7 'Diaolou' (watchtowers) and the 8 villas in the villages were constructed in the early 20th century. In June 2001 the Majianglong 'Diaolou' was declared by the State Council as a protected Major National Cultural Heritage"

(Copied from a sign within the historic village) One of the watchtowers can be seen in the background. Taken late afternoon on a cloudy day. I would have liked more time exploring these villages. Very quiet & peaceful & not swarming with tour groups. Kaiping makes a good base to explore some of the many smaller towns & villages featuring 1,833 of these 'Diaolou'.
