Photographer’s Note
Xiahe, often called "Little Tibet", is a pilgrimage site in the mountains of Gansu province, China. According to a Tibetan friend, some 50,000 Tibetans make the pilgrimage each year to the Labrang Monastery in Xiahe for the colorful Lunar New Year festival. Many, like this woman, make the voyage by foot in blistering cold temperatures, prostrating and praying the whole distance, and then continue the prostrations in a clockwise circuit around the monastery walls during the days leading up to the festival.
