Photographer’s Note
these guys were extras in a film that was being made amongst the beautiful dunes of dunhuang. some tourists had plonked themselves down on top of one of the dunes to watch the filming; blissfully unaware(?) that they were in shot. the crew had to stop filming and an irrate producer & director started screaming & shouting at them to move. i reckon the tourists were too far away to understand because they stayed put. the guys in this shot just sat down and enjoyed the palava....watching the people who'd originally stopped to watch them.
but anyway, you don't need to know all that - it's certainly not what the picture says to me. it speaks of the stillness which the desert brings.
i love the way the guys' poles are slanted in exactly the same direction.
if i was to take this shot again, i'd try to angle it so there was less (or none) of the lake in the frame.
cheers, jenny
ps. i promise to comment on at least one picture for anyone who critiques one of mine...it's how we learn, eh!?!

Ah oui !!! on est avec eux dans le film avec cette image... tout comme eux on attend l'évènement :o)
Belles couleurs et bon esprit d'évasion.

Symetry is good in this shot. Colors are good given that the sun must have been high in the sky; for lack of any long shadows. As shot is curious, but given you notes it might have been more interesting to see the tourist.

it's definitely not the normal Dunhuang sand dunes photos. I like that it looks as though the men are facing a big tan wall, even though the dune is quite far away. were you too shy to get a shot of the men from the from? It doesn't look like the the light would have stopped a front shot.

Being there is a great pleasure. Being there with a camera and great eyes for this well-composed photo is just wonderful, Jenny.
As you mentioned, I just tried to see how the desert looks without the lake (see workshop), then I agree with you, "if we were to take this shot again..."
Thanks for sharing,
Thanh

Hi Jenny,
Very nice composition. I think the angle you chose is very nice, with the guys fitting the big dunes and waiting for their time in scene. Beautiful colours and nice contrast.
Best Regards,
Ricardo
