From a CNN Report (October 2013)
With its skies regularly shrouded by a filthy film of gray smog, bringing chaos to the transportation network and forcing millions to seek refuge behind surgical masks, Beijing has been forced to take more extreme action.
Officials in China's capital announced a raft of emergency measures in a bid to tackle the problem, including mandatory factory closures and bans on cars entering the city on days when pollution levels are particularly high.
While Beijing is not alone when it comes to smoke-filled skies, this city of more than 20 million people has come to symbolize the environmental cost of China's break-neck economic growth.
Taken at midday
As I read Ike´s comment about pollution in Beijing yesterday, I decided to post some photos to show how it was two years ago, a cloudy white sky and the fog almost hiding the not so far buildings, in this case the Bird's Nest (Traditional Chinese 鳥巢), the Olympic stadium built for the 2008 Olympic Games, photo taken from a bridge crossing one of the new avenues
Sorry, not a blue sky with beautiful cluds..

you have illustrated very well the terrible smog that has become the curse of modern China, the colours of the flower beds are a perfect contrast to the murky BG.
I also enjoy the nice depth created by the road that leads nicely into the scene.
Kind regards Les.

The race to modernize the country had taken its toll on the environment in Chine. Well shown on this cityscape photo, Maria.
A modern garden architecture with concrete big flowerpots, added the much needed gree-lung over there and the colors gave extra vivid tone to the photo. Nicely documented hazy day in the metropolis.

an interesting reportage photography. Nicely shown the pollution effect. In fact our planet is colourful but we are constantly destroying it. A nice panorama describing the story. Tfs.

Such a contrast between the infamous dirty white smoggy skies, and the clean streets and attractive garden park, and taken from a superb high pov on the pedestrian overpass. Good sharpness and the repetition of the flower beds adds interest. The bicycles everywhere are synonymous with China. I lived in China for a year and they also had many motor cycles. The Olympic stadiums were still under construction when I visited in 2007. Tfs!

Pollution=Profit. With all those beautiful nature scenes on TE we would almost forget that a part of our world is filled with air pollution contributing to global warming but unfortunately it's a fact of life that we need to find a solution for.
In this shot the level of pollution is clearly seen and very worrying too illustrating the dreadful air quality and the awful atmosphere of the city. I particularly like your thinking behind the image is thought provoking and I love your decent composition too that says a lot but unsure if the returning birds are able to find their nests! This is an excellent piece of reportage and hand warming photography, i think may even look better in B&W., Congrats

J'aime ces parterres colorées, avec les arbres, la structure moderne avec le fond comme un voile de brume, intéressante note

the "filthy film of gray smog" is depicted effectively in your photo shrouding the distant buildings and the architectural wonder of the stadium, hard to see and enjoy in these conditions. The light and the atmosphere are very dull, its hard to enjoy a walk or life going on around you. Did you wear a mask too? The colourful flower beds are atrractive but I think there's also an irony in their presence in this setting. The perspectives work wonderfully in your panoramic frame, we get a very interesting description of this part of the vast city. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely Sunday,
