Houtong: Northern Chinese traditional style housing.

I'm going to post a series of B&W houtong pics over the next few weeks. This is taken in Dong Cheng District, in central Beijing... from this place you can walk to Tiananmen Sq, the Forbidden City and Wangfujing, the main shopping street in about 10 minutes. But if you take a back laneway into the houtongs, you could be a world away.

this is good, it was cold there I think, B&W depicts this cold very well... symetrical composition..? why not, two rows of houses, two lanes on the road, two bicycles going in two directions. the soldier or a policeman is great, I'd take an another picture of him in 3 seconds... good work.

This is really good and I agree with the comment about B&W depicting the cold well. The man holding holding up his scarf is another indication of that and you saw it well. What amazes me is that these two are managing to remain upright on the bicycles on a very slippery surface. And, the man has only one hand on the handlebars!

Great shot, Josh. Good choice of B/W. I like the way the policeman looks colder than the other cyclist. The trees make a nice background to this composition.

Black and white reflects a picture of old street, vivid and impressive. Your idea of depicting a series of bystreets is great. By the way, "Houtong" in Pinyin should be "Hutong".

realy intersting!

very nice josh. keep up your good work.
