Another Shanghai sunset. Here from the groundfloor around Xintiandi, a newly renovated area of old-style shikumen neighbourhood, which - in typical Shanghai fashion - has been turned into a leisure area with foreign and Chinese cafés, shops, bars, clubs and restaurants.
The motive is the "silent mastodonts"; the skyscrabers, which stand as visible symbols of Shanghai's rapid spatial transformation. Inner-city soil is extremely valuable in the city, and the principle of transformation (destruction of the old, building the nwe) is that of economic profitability. |
