[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is part of the Grand Canal waterway in Suzhou in China.
The main rivers in China run east-west. To facilitate transportation between the northern and southern parts of China, north-south running waterways were constructed as early as 500 BC. In 580 AD, a project that joined the smaller waterways into a Grand Canal running from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou, south of Shanghai in the south was started and eventually completed in around 620 AD.
This is a tributory to the main canal in Suzhou, about 60 km north of Shanghai. People live right along the river, with shops and teahouses right at the water edge. It's like mini Venice, but because the water is a running river, there isn't the stench often noted in Venice.
Picture was taken in late afternoon giving me a warm glow and nice contrast to the buildings.
