[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
After a wet, gloomy few days working in Shanghai the weekend was free. I decided to head to Hangzhou a couple of hours bus-ride from Shanghai. Described as a quiet picturesque town situated around a lake. Unfortunately the worse excesses of the Chinese tourist industry were there to behold.
I have never seen so many people.
Quiet - it wasnt
Picturesque - it may have been once
As for the lake - I couldnt see it for boats
And the weather set the tone for the day - grey overcast skies and drizzle.

Hi Elaine
Amazing color for this picture.Did you change the white balance ?
Anyway, the result is great, as usual.
It's a vzry good travel portrait
Bravo !
Alain

I'm sorry that your day was so disappointing, Elaine, but , a least you got one good shot from it. He has a wonderful lived-in face and a grat candid expression. The dull light has fused the context into an harmonious whole and is lifted by the detail on that lovely bench. he seems to be holding a mobile telephone or an MP3. An interesting comment of Chinese life. Regards kevin

Dag Elaine,
Groetjes, Henk

Hi Elaine, I hope that all is well. Good candid capture of the man sitting on the ornate bench. The dull lighting actually works well in this situation, I think, and transports a somehow melancholic mood. Interesting character face and simple yet balanced framing. Enjoy your weekend.

Nihao Elaine

A superb daily life scene & portrait from Hangzhou. Good sharpness & dof. I like the sidewards glance. Tfs!

Dear Elaine
Even in gloomy light & with the gloomy looking subject, you created a really good portrait. Like the framing off-centre, with him looking into the frame. I like the decor on the bench as well. Good work!
Best Regards
Angshu

Hi Elaine, I don't know why but this photo touches me a lot - maybe for its colours, or absence of it. Hangzhou was one of the places that I liked the most in China (with Huangshan), but in the beginning of the 90s there used to be a sort of old guesthouse the other side of the lake, far from the city, not much frequented and very quiet. I returned there 3 times, the 2 last times the weather was similar to the one you describe but in a way I enjoyed it too - the 1st time was an enchantment with the golden light in the morning mist... If you have the chance to return, try to avoid the centre of the city, which I found uninteresting and too crowded - anyway, your photo captures well your mood but it also represents the life in the parks anywhere in China : this is a beautiful portrait !
Compliments,
Cath.
