Puji Temple, Putuoshan Island, China.

Putuoshan island is about 100km south east of Shanghai, we reached the island by taking a speed ferryboat some km outside Shanghai. Putuo s one of the Zhoushan Islands in eastern Zhejiang Province, and has an area of 12.5 square kilometres, with mountain ranges in the northwest and beaches in the southeast.

The island is a place of pilgrimage and chill-out for rich Shanghai chinese. There are only a few places on earth with more temples per inhabitant then on Putuoshan. Mount Putuo is one of the four sacred mountains in Buddhism, the others being Mount Wutai, Mount Jiuhua, and Mount Emei (Bodhimandas for Manjushri, Ksitigarbha, and Samantabhadra, respectively).

Putuo is covered with many temples and monasteries, both large and small. All are under the directive of the Chinese Buddhist Association. Many monks and nuns from all over the country, and abroad, go to great lengths to live and practice there.
