Photographer’s Note

This little boy is sitting in the back of his grandad's pedicab. An old form of public transport, which is still very much alive in Shaoxing.

---

Shaoxing is a major city in the north of Zhejiang, about halfway between Hangzhou and Ningbo. It is well known for its rice wine (which we mainly use for cooking) and its stinky tofu.

Its main tourist drawcard is as the hometown of Lu Xun, probably China's most loved novelist of the 20th century, but the city also has an interesting history as one of the region canal towns.

The Chinese text on the pedicab reads: "Teach politeness to Shaoxing people, strive to the nation's politeness" (with thanks to wawa for the translation).
