Photographer's Note

This photograph is taken towards a Putong new division from The Bund(Witān) which faced Huangpu River of Shanghai. A Putong new division is the area inserted into Huangpu River and the mouth of Yangtze River. It was a ground where the waste land spreads before development. Some divisions of this area were unified and a Putong new division was inaugurated in 1993. The inauguration purpose was to establish a status as Top Development Center in China. It is the time that Deng Xiaoping (August 22, 1904 - February 19, 1997) tackles reconstruction of the People's Republic of China exhausted by the Cultural Revolution, and began to promote a "reform opening" policy. This area is one of the special economic zones which introduced foreign funding positively and built the foundation of modernization construction of the country in such a meaning. It could be said to be the subject which aims at introduction of the market economy under socialist economy. It is interesting in the point of old and new contrast when comparing with the Bund on the opposite shore with old high-rise building of Western type in a line which is a settlement area from the 19th century second half to the first half of the 20th century. Although the photograph was taken in 1997, many skyscrapers already stood in a row. It is a television tower that is visible to the left side. I have memorized there was the day when the light rain is falling and which fog generated.
This photograph is scanned with CanoScan Lide60 and digitized.
