Yantai is by Australian standards a large city(by Chinese standards a small town) on the northern coast of Shandong province. It is an important port and shipbuilding city. I visited my son who lived there for some years . This is a quiet corner in a very busy city. While much of the city seems to be being torn down for highrise an area of old European buildings near the foreshore has been renovated and preserved . (Earlier in the 20th century it was known as Chefoo and areas were allocate to various European powers as in other Chinese ports).At the time of this photo the buildings were unoccupied and very few people were to be found there.I was surprised to find such a peaceful courtyard - it could well be in a European city.
