This bridge is in the Fuzi Miao district in Nanjing, the centre of Confucian study for more than 1500 years. In ancient times, thousands of students were studying the Confucian classics to pass their civil service examinations here.
This bridge was leading to a different district where in those days all the funhouses and prostitution was located. It was said that to find a beautiful girl, you had to visit Nanjing. Some of the girls of Nanjing even became famous for their beauty, which no man could resist and are still legends today.
Naturally, for the students that were not so eager to pass the exams anymore or failed, it was tempting to search for fun accross the river. That's why this bridge had the notorious nickname of 'the bridge of failure'. Students that ever crossed the bridge were not very likely to pass their exams anymore. |
