Photographer’s Note

This photo was taken at the Presidential Palace in Nanjing. The three iron sculptures is a tribute to the everyday men who were victims of the Nanjing Massacre during the weeks that followed the fall of Nanjing on December 13, 1937.

The figures are actually only about 10 inches in height. I took the photo up-close, centering on the leading figure, to give the appearance of a life size man. There is also great sorrow sculpted into the face and eyes of the man in focus. I wanted his eyes to be in a position to lock onto the viewer.

I set my camera to a cold hue to enhance the feeling of the subject and subject matter.
