First a red bicycle,
now a blue tricycle.
Here's another one from Tongli.
Once upon a long time ago the world's longest canal, meandered for almost 1800km from Beijing in the north all the way to Hangzhou in the south.
These days, with depths up to 3 metres and stone bridges spanning the route, canal use is restricted to fairly small, flat-bottomed vessels, and even then only parts of it are seasonally navigable.
The canal area in southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang has seen rapid economic development (what else is new?) and has become an economic stronghold in modern China.
Yet, in the midst of all this, pockets of authenticity survive, and many of them are now being promoted as tourist destinations.
They offer fascinating glimpses in the past, when economic growth somehow seemed to have more of a romantic ring to it.
Tongli is one of those famous old canal town, it's just a couple of hours north of Shanghai.
Most guidbooks mention it because its unique Chinese Sex Culture Museum, which is all very interesting, of course, but there is a lot more to this wonderful little town, plus: there are some really great places to stay!
This picture shows some typical traffic in the narrow streets in the old center of Tongli.
After the boats, the bicycle still is the favourite mode of transport in this pocket of Chinese authenticity. Outside the old center, cars rule.

a great shot with a beautiful grey wall ...I think it would be better without the shadow and the stair in the right....
I'll try a WS...

Ci mostri una Cina rurale, fatta di semplici situazioni, ben diverse dalle immagini di Cina ultramoderna a cui ci stanno abituando. Interessante reportage.

good composition here with the trike in the diagonal of the textured wall. The light is a bit harsh but hey, sometimes you just can't choose and it doesn't take much away anyway.

Une très bonne scène de vie dans la rue de Tongli. J'aime l'arrière plan constitué par le mur gris, un peu moins la partie à droite avec l'escalier et la lanterne rouge;

And next one is a yellow bicycle? :-)
Nice one, for sure the color of the bike, but also with the textured background adding a lot to increase the color impact. I like the red spot of the lamp in top right corner.

Hello evil triplet (hehe),
I really like this simplicity, the space around the cyclist, the colours match as well. These are the old scenes in China some say are fading in the face of rapid development, I hope places of simple character and age like this remain.

Excellent observational image and a very well taken street candid shot. Wonderful stark contrast between them and the grey faded wall but full of interest and local flavor. A really appealing and well-seen study, it's a delight to view. The main subjects are critically sharp with great dof moving diagonally, realised that this narrow alley would've been really difficult for exposure in bright sunshine but you are blessed with balance of light. Just love that texture and the true blue coincidentally between the tricyle and the mother/child as central focal of interest and I suppose every bit is important to viewers to understand how others live and therefore needs to be there. A good slice of life here. Well done

une photo qui ne donne pas l'impression que la Chine est une des premières puissances mondiales, mais la présente sous son aspect précaire et modeste, quartiers désuets, rues pas nettes.
heureusement, il y a du soleil, ce qui donne de très belles lumières.

This is another excellent picture from this location. The blue trike stands out against the drab, grey wall. I like the sun hats which must be essential for the hot sun. Lovely sharpness and exposure that gives detail of the textures.
