Chengdu the capital of Sichuan, is a melting pot of the surrounding rural areas and neighboring provinces where large number of countryside people coming into the city every year. This city is a place that has a lot of the old and the new, towering skyscrapers next to dilapidated single floor cement houses, new BMW is parked next to hand pulled food carts covered in cooking oil, women wearing posh clothes directing a porter in dirty ripped shorts where to put her things. This city certainly has enough ironic imagery, but irony aside it’s a place where two major and very different Chinese social structures coexist.
It's amazing just 200m behind the mainstreets of the city centre another world of laid-back life awaits just like in a small village. There are many small shops, stalls and workshops etc but mainly these are the living quarters with small houses where you can see a part of the daily life of the people at the sidewalks in front of their houses. These crowded areas offer a deep look into a different time and life of China and proves to be a great opportunity to take some interesting shots.
A quick shot somewhere in the back alley
I let this picture speak itself...

curious frame and superb colors.
I like thus daily life shot.
ourania (25352) 2013-07-21 13:13
this is a lovely and intriguing portrait of the "tough" little boy carried around as if in a throne. He must have got quite streetwise from that priviledged seat and his look towards the lens is captivating. It's "ironic", to use a word from your note, how his tough and suspicious expression is so funny and its ultimate effect is to make us smile. Like we oftern say of the wrinkles on people's faces, his scars tell his story too:) So much to see in a fleeting passage in a sidestreet of Chengdu, a scene that disappeared in the dark background a moment later. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great week,

Quelle jolie capture!Cadrage bien pensé et belles couleurs. Ce bambin est très mignon....même si il n'a pas l'air très content d'être photographié.

Hello Abmdsudi, judging by the look on his face and the marks on his chunky young body this little chap is going to be someone not to mess with later on in life...
It`s a very emotive portrait, very suitable for the conditions you express in your very interesting note.
A nicely balanced shot that you just have to keep looking at.Great stuff.

J'aime vos images ciselées quant au rendu général et au traitement particulier relevant du sujet.
La qualité photographique est remarquable.

Salam Abmdsudi. He does look like the littlest emperor sitting on his portable mini throne, who is not pleased with his subjects or foreign delegates gazing at his visage. Love the composition: the tight cropping, the slight tilt, sense of movement and the wonderful combination of light and colour.Regards. Klaudio.
subhendu_bagchi (25065) 2013-07-21 18:22
beautiful frame. Love the litte baby sitting on the carrier... Good colours. Nice light. A nice tight composition indeed, which I enjoyed a lot. Tfs.

Hello Abmdsudi - once again you show a strong eye for these little details of street life. This child's face is wonderfully expressive, and he seems to have spotted you, though I'm not sure he's happy about it! A thoughtfully framed and interesting snapshot.
KristinsCamera (2373) 2013-07-21 19:37
what a capture, abmdsudi ~
i don't know how you managed it, but the baby especially looks like an oil painting, an "old master" ~ really an unusual and wonderful street scene.
the colors are sumptuous, and the baby chair, although interesting in its practicality and handcraftedness, looks uncomfortable for poor mama.
his expression, that look of distrust, is priceless.
she's carrying him from the sunlight into the darkness.
really an amazing shot ~ well done.

Hi dear Abmdsudi YTH, apa kabar?
Great some documentary and great portrait shot!
His severe eye contact can meks me think of thier hard life. Intentional under exposure and nice cropping make so impressive image as your own originality.

I visited Chengdu several times but never had opportunity to capture such superb photo like this. The small boy is in perfect light. I like the direct eye contact and also well managed BG blur. All in all an excellent snapshot from Chengdu roads. Well done. Greetings, Miro

Nice scene with mother and son.
Another image rich of colors.
Intreresting and original composition.

Great portrait of the littl eboy who has an anguished wise beyond his years look on his face probably as a result of the hardships of the life surrounding him.
Great daily life shot.
Urs (14082) 2013-07-22 3:18
The little fellow seems not to be too happy to have to sit on the back of his mother. His face tells the story and his bamboo seat really is special. Well done
bayno (18342) 2013-07-22 6:41
another beautiful moment captured in the street, my Ciao Abmdsudi,
favorite theme together with portraits, I think that we are very similar about, I like the attention you give to light, in this case is magnificent, excellent tight framing and wary look of the child , sympathetic even the odd bamboo seat in which he sits, great job as always,
holmertz (36299) 2013-07-22 7:01
It doesn't look very comfortable neither to carry this bamboo chair nor to sit in it. We can't see the mother's face but her son looks very dissatisfied. Or maybe he just doesn't like your camera. Regardless of the reasons for his look this is a charming and exotic picture of daily life in a Chinese city, a quick glimpse of persons passing by. I like the spontaneity and unplanned atmosphere of the shot, still you had time to get the xomposition right and the exposure perfect.
nikkitta (12654) 2013-07-22 9:41
This is a quite charming capture, well taken focusing on the baby
The baby expression attracts all the interest, also the cane chair (never seen before) is something quite typical
As usual a personal, complete informative note
Congrats and all the best in this week

This is an excellent series that you are sharing, a peep into another world. This little man does not look very happy, but despite that its a brilliant and very strong emotion to capture on camera. I love the seat he is in to, I wonder is that homemade or is that just the style? A great documentary shot.
rbassin (15786) 2013-07-22 10:53
une très belle scène de vie, ce gros plan est vraiment bien fait: avec des détails intéressants et des couleurs agréables.

This photo is just too cute! The little chubby fellow is too cute for words and the contraption he's sitting on is also cute.
Cricri (100105) 2013-07-23 1:01
Belle prise en gros plan sur l'enfant assit dans un siège en bambou, j'aime son regard, méfiant, mais intéresser par la caméra..la lumière joue aussi un rôle important dans cette scène, très jolie
marabu61 (7209) 2013-07-23 4:54
This little boy doesn't seem to be happy but the carrier chair is rather ingeniousand looks quite confortable.
Old and new are so close together in China that is true, the scenery and the mood can change from one block to the other. You did well at going of the beaten track to discover the old and true China that still exist behind the walls of glass and steel.
have a great day
Graal (94978) 2013-07-23 8:16
nice scene and portrait of child. Good captured moment. Fine theme about the daily life - also.
Have a nice evening.
krzychu30 (15258) 2013-07-23 9:54
the facial expresion of this little child is priceless-it conveys really excellently all feelings and emothions of this child.Another great aspect of the photo, which delight me is the light-the way it interplays with the shades and how it creates unique mood of the scene.
Nicely observed and executed.
adramad (34821) 2013-07-23 10:24
We continue to enjoy these beautiful images, of various characters, I love .... superb composition with this baby is going to the back of his mother, in that seat as original craft, the child is gorgeous and looks so chubby, a charm, it hurts ... insect bites we see him in the leg and somewhere else.
As always great good harmony between the shadows and highlights.
Good management of light and sharpness.
Well done. I like.
Have a nice day.
sdnpicz (195) 2013-07-23 13:10
Perfect light management and overall composition.
Of course this picture speaking itself.
Mother who has to go places for work etc but also have responsibility of her child and she do it well. And it seem that the lady is not much young but a middle age perhaps.
The kid whose childhood is perhaps blend with hardship. Kid's look is very much expressive. How those tiny hand and feet are projecting out of his portable chair.
Not easy for both.
Superb! Thanks for sharing.
thebest (4272) 2013-07-23 18:52
Yes this picture does speak for itself in a 1000 words.
Just look at that dear baby boy in his little bamboo carry basket...
He looks as if he is well nourished - a chubby little man - He does look very empty eyed & unhappy... WHY so many scars on his body - maybe some of the marks are insect & animal bites?
We will never get to know.
mkamionka (29151) 2013-07-24 4:28
the western world is also becoming full of contrasts where the rich bankers drive luxurious cars and park them near poor people whose savings were lost and so was their job. Sad story.
A beautiful photo. It reminds me the weekend when I had a short hike with my baby carrying her in a carrier similar to this but made in Sweden and of an material not of wood.
Lovely portrait of the child,
very well captured as always,
eldancer1 (24625) 2013-07-24 10:07
Humans are very innovative and creative as shown with this mother's way of carrying her child. In the old western ways Native Americans bundle their children to the mother's back. I like the expression on this boys face, it's classic. Nicely captured with good details. Well done, tfs.
kato (11630) 2013-07-24 21:13
You're capturing well this daily life in Chengdu by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impresive to see the spectacle in which the mother is walking to back alley carrying her lovely child on the back in a basket. It's impressive in her green blouse with good embroidery pattern, too. Anyway, it seems to the whole surface of people's life. Now, the China society is faced with the interval of modernization and tradition society, holding large population. It is interesting to what kind of course it will go from now on.
claudeD (30087) 2013-07-25 12:58
Very fine picture showing this amazing child p,ortrait. I like your framing and the very good colors. Perfect sharpness and clarity. I like this fotojob ve ry much.TFS.

eugenefu (522) 2013-07-25 22:55
Nice slice of daily life of China people. The expression of the little boy makes this shot more meaningful.
Glint (6163) 2013-07-27 14:27
I really like the tight framing of this shot. This little guy is certainly checking you out! Like babies everywhere he is chubby and cuddly and quite delightful despite his frown.
I also like the bright butterfly blouse against the black bg and that there is space for the woman to walk into. Altogether a charming image.
Waylim (24938) 2013-08-01 22:59
Not your best quality shot, but the moment capture and the rarely seen part of China makes it all worth it. I have seen similar woman carrying a baby in a basket, I was polite to ask her for a photo, she said no. So I didn't take one. This is really wonderful, I love the peculiar express of the little boy with a slight attitude :)
macjake (51262) 2013-08-15 14:02
another great shot and great note!
my question to you is, when you're in these areas where you do stay??? you just walk up to a hotel and ask for a room? how does that work? or are you only passing by? so many questions!
as for your photo, its wonderful to see the young child going for a ride on his mothers back. Especially with that wooden (bamboo perhaps?) setup.
sounds like a place I'd love to visit with the camera!
adores (33846) 2013-08-15 16:26
He's looking at you so seriously, sitting on his little chair of bamboo:)!
It reminds me of another one you have posted from Xian.
A really good daily scene! I like it a lot. You captured it very well!
