Pingyao (Chinese: 平遥) is an amazingly preserved ancient town, some 700 km from Beijing. It still retains its layout from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with preserved Ming- and Qing-style residences numbering close to 4,000.
In recent years it has become a fixed stop on the tourist trail, and the little town sees a lot of visitors, both Chinese and international. Still, we rather liked it. The ticket to town includes several buildings and halls you can visit, which are great, but it might be a good idea try and avoid the rush hours.
This picture was taken from the southern gate tower looking to the north along Nan Dajie ('the great street south'). Visible in the distance, shrouded in the haze of the day, is the 14th century tower which marks the center of the city.

A lovely picture indeed, not that old considering the age of the town itself :-)
Great perspective over the roofs till the end of the street.
I like the touch of red colours from the lanterns, so typically Chinese.
I wonder what's on the first roof in the foreground though ! Surely, it can't be drying washing, can it ?
Thanks for sharing.

Ni hao, Benny,
Looks great. I travelled right past the Pingyao turnoff in 2007. Wish I had known about it back then. My bus actually stopped to let some passengers off wanting to go there. A superb high pov with good sharpness & nice repetition of the distinctively shaped roofs and stone houses! Tfs!

Hello Benny - The rooftops are so evocative of old China and I love them. Add in the red paper lanterns and we see China in a preconceived nutshell. An image to be cherished as the new China sweeps though the land. A pleasure to see. Warm regards rosemary

It has the charm of old houses in China, the curved roofs and red lanterns, taken from the tower let you create a good composition from a great POV
Informative, interesting note

Love te POV, Benny. Much more than a straight ahead shot would have done, this emphasizes the length and repetition of the street here. Really clear architectural statements as these houses form a massive approach to the palace ahead - imperial architecture, no matter the country of origin.
Though overall the colors here are muted, the occasional red lantern or colored umbrella add some nice splashes of color. Thanks!

A great perspective created by the old street and the attractive traditional roofs. Good catch, I like it a lot.
Have a fine weekend.

When I saw the thumbnail I thought it could be Lijiang. Very good high pov. The view over the roofs is really great and I like the haze in background. Very good dof! Seems they have something drying on the roof, or is it covering something?

What a cool old cityscape, I always wonder if these old towns and neighbourhoods will survive in some Asian cities. The misty tones make this feel nostalgic to me, really cool.

Dag dear Benny
Great perspective leading our eyes through the narrow path between the tiled houses on either side. Interesting to see some patches of red thrown in by varous objects....couple of bikes, lantrerns and what appears as a tip of an umbrella. Nice work!

Nice to see the curves of these lovely traditional tiled rooftops stretching into the distance that have been preserved so well. They lead us to the tower in the background which is great taking us on a journey through the image. I especially like the detail of all the cloths on the front roof. Looks like an interesting place to visit even if it is touristy.

I always enjoy visiting your site. You are capturing China well. This is a great roof top view catching the many details of the roof lines and shapes. Great POV, nice sharp-crisp picture. TFS drt100
