Hanging Monastery

The Hanging Monastery near Datong.
This monastery was built into the side of a canyon and has been ‘hanging’ there intact for over 1'600 years (around 400 AD) ! It was built along the contours of the cliff and the various buildings are connected by bridges and boardwalks and many statues of gods and Buddha’s. The structure is supported by dozens of wooden pillars and the interior is literally half-house, half-cave. The complex is located at the foot of Mt. Hengshan, which is one of the five “Sacred Mountains” in China… |

So how does one enter the monastery? Were you able to go up and visit?
I would have preferred to have seen more of the cliff from the bottom to see how high the monastery really is!
Thanks!
