Xian City Wall represents one of the oldest fortifications and best preserved Chinese city walls. Construction of Chang'an (as it was known in ancient times) City Wall began in 194BC and the existing wall was rebuilt during the Ming Dynasty in 1370. Since then the wall has undergone three times of repairs and restorations from 1568 till 1983 to the present structure, complete with a deep moat, which is 20 meters wide, surrounding it thus making it a complete defensive system. It is still probably the biggest walled city in the world. It measures 12meters height, 15-18 meters thickness at the base and a total of about 14km length in rectangular shape. There is a rampart at every 120 meters. The ramparts, 98 in total, are towers that extend out from the main wall. The top of the rampart being at the same level as the top of the wall were built to defend against the enemy climbing up the wall. Each rampart has a sentry building, in which the soldiers could protect the entire wall without exposing themselves to the enemy. The distance between two ramparts is just within the range of arrow shot from either side. The top of City Wall can be ascended via 18 gates, the most popular is the South City Gate or (Yongning Gate) and no matter which gate is chosen, we still can complete the whole circumference of the wall in one circle.
This late afternoon picture shows the top of city wall on the South Gate. On the right is Xian old city and the new city with highrise buildings on the left.

A great shot here of this lone bike rider heading off into the distance. Just a wonderful photo with hazy sun lending a great feel to what must have been a hot and humid day in August in Shaanxi. Very nicely done.

a dynamic shot I really like: it seems like you took it from a bike, just like that man who is riding his bike towards the sun.
Very well done,
have a good day

Ha, a familiar scene for me. Great capture, I like how the man bends forwards on his bike. I always thought this a great place to be in the early evening, when the sun sets, and then rush off to one of those fine restaurants downtown. Great picture, Abmdsudi. Thanks for sharing your work.

Very nice composition, beautiful image...but the horizon for a regular citizen of China is a big red wall.

This is a really nice shot, even if shooting against the light, you managed very nice details. The lantern provide a strong essence of China, but other wise it looks rather European with the strong walkway. Xian is one of my favorite city in China when I visit more than 10 years ago. I wish the sun were lower and not as strong which would makes this shot better compositionally. The bike give a strong anchor point. I like it very much still.
