Photographer’s Note

Well, actually it wasn't that bad at all. Compared to other Chinese villages and areas, ethnicity in Zhaoxing was not very commodified and circus-like. The picture is from a singing and dancing performance by the local Dong people. It was being performed for a group of drunk han-Chinese (as well as me and my friends), but it was very relaxed and seemed quite "natural" in relation to the stories we heard about the Miao villages in Eastern Guizhou.
The local costumes are coloured with indigo and look very nice. The performance took place by an old stage made for that purpose, just in front of one of the drum towers.
